Kopitar?

Not a fan of either team, but if there's a team who needs to get worse before they get better, it's LA

This makes Calgary a worse team by spending almost double the cap on a player marginally better than Monahan offensively. Kopitar is miles ahead better defensively but that’s not worth the extra cap hit and years on an older player.

Trading Monahan would likely be the most foolish thing the Flames can do. Sure he had a bad playoff run, he was also injured though. 2 years prior when the Flames made the playoffs and were swept by the ducks Monahan scored a goal in every single game and was arguably the best player on the team that series. Writing him off after one bad series is idiotic. He's also only 24 and has plenty of time to improve on his weaknesses.

But Monahan is younger, cheaper and producing more points so why would this be a good trade for Calgary?

Because Kopitar alternates good seasons with bad ones. He had a terrible season this year so he's a lock for 90+ points and dominant 2-way play in 19-20

Why would Monahan be traded?

Because a number of Flames fans have decided to put the majority, or in some cases, all the blame for the Flames woes on Monahan,

He is an easy target, quiet, non-flashy game and Canadian so the group that hates him all negatives that they can go after.

There is such a small pool of centers that are better than him that there are zero deals that make sense at all.

Any trade involving Monahan is likely going to be a lose. The only chance you have is to move him for a younger guy that you hope can develop into a better center, but that is super risky and doesn't fit with where the rest of the team is at.

I'd be interested in Stamkos/Point from TB, or Barzal from NYI?
I actually think Monahan was one of the biggest names that was thrown around when the Stamkos rumors were all over the place back in 2015.

You can, you just can't win a cup with a Monahan caliber 1C.

That is a premature assessment in my opinion.
O'Rielly is three years and a half years older and his career high prior to this season was 64 points. He took his all around game to another level this season. Sean Monahan has a career high of 82 points, and while his defensive game is not close to that of O'Rielly's at the moment he can certainly continue to better it and improve on it much like O'rielly did with his offensive totals. This is a player that hasn't had an appropriate offseason to train in over three years due to injuries and is now finally healthy. Keep in mind he was an absolute animal for the first 50 games this season, and at some point in the final month and a half fractured his thumb. If Monahan can add some speed and strength to his game there is certainly the talent there to get to another level. Trading him now would be foolish.
