Hoffman is on a 12 game point streak right now.
Had one of the higher 5on5 scoring rates in past year. Not too surprising. Good on cats for snatching him up and avoiding potential landing spot in metro. We all know hexy wouldn't touch him.

Is Weal new Hagg? Blocking voro and such?

Only in the minds of those who ignore Vorobyev's actual play.

If a prospect is really talented and NHL ready, no one is going to "block" him, ask Lindblom, who needed a week to move JVR, a 30 goal scorer, down to the 3rd line, or Provorov.

The problem comes when people confuse projections of future play with current play.
Weal and Weise aren't going to block Rubtsov, Kase and Frost when Hextall deems them ready for starting jobs.
But if it's a "tie," Hextall tends to be conservative, figuring a few more months in the AHL never hurt anyone.

Eventually the veteran will:
a) cool off
b) get injured
c) get traded or not resigned

Thing is the kid has to take advantage of his opportunity, Vorobyev failed. He'll get another shot at some point.

In the Hakstol thread you were just touting Vorobyev as an example of the Flyers not treading water. Now the kid is being lightly run down as not yet ready to replace Weal, whom no glowing remarks are mentioned about. The same Weal who was included in a tier above Vorobyev as more youth on the team that shows rebuild levels of improvement, and not again, treading water.

You are a self-conflicting individual.

Weal is 26, not exactly a veteran retread, and he'll probably be gone next year with Frost, Rubtsov and Vorobyev vying for center spots. And he'll start somewhere else as a 3C if he continues this solid play.

The point is unlike 2-3 years ago, when you looked at LHV and saw Leier, Cousins, Straka, Bardreau and Rosehill as our call up options, we have a lot more real talent behind the players on the NHL roster. We had Ghost (blew out his ACL), Morin, Alt and MacDonald as the veteran options on defense. Now we have players who could probably step in now if needed, and may be pushing for promotions before the TDL

When shifts are less than a minute, 15-20 seconds is kind of significant.

That aside, the point is that someone was trotting out Weal's CF% like that one number is particularly meaningful. No single stat can sum up anything. No two stats can sum up anything. Stats are a tool. Nothing more, nothing less.

Personally, I think Weal is a liability. He's weak on the puck and he doesn't bury his chances. His CF% doesn't change that. Weal is 26 now. When a guy has wheels, people tend to give him a lot more rope. I think Weal reached the end of his rope last season. He's just a placeholder at this point.

Check out NaturalStatTrick’s shift starts data. The vast majority (nearly 60%) of every skaters shift starts are on the fly. Matt Cane wrote a series of articles on shift starts and how they only really mean anything in tiny samples. In aggregate, they don’t really convey much useful info at all (since, again, most shift starts are on the fly).

The aggregate where they tend to even out was 5 years of data. Even in the course of a single season the data showed zone starts could have a significant impact on the almighty Corsi.
