The important thing to keep in mind with Aarne Talvitie is he's a character kid, very smart and competitive. Though he needs a year or two at the AHL level, I would not rule out a future bottom 6 role with the Devils.

i feel like that describes a looooot of our prospects. it's very nice that were starting to mix in some blue chip talent in smith, holtz, and probably whoever we draft in this year's first round.

once we have a better handle on our prospects floors/ceilings, i would expect fitz to trade some of these valuable bottom 6 guys to upgrade in other areas. the anderson trade clearly wasn't worth it, but in principle it's still a good philosophy to espouse

I was hoping he'd eventually be a replacement for Coleman. At this point, after his injury, I kind of see him as our current version of Matt Ruchty (for those of you who remember he 90's River Rats/Utica Devils). I absolutely loved that player, he had grit and some offense - like a minor league version of Claude Lemeiux, but he was never able to crack the NHL.

Is torn ACL one of those injuries that can take years to fully heal or get close to what it was before? Any examples of NHLers getting back to form couple years after said injury?

Not sure if there is anything more recent, but here is a paper from 2014 looking at ACL injuries in NHL players. Granted these are pros who probably have access to better PT and training than a college player does.

Performance and Return to Sport After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in National Hockey League Players
That was a very interesting read, thank you.

I found that Malkin had torn ACL end his season in 2011 and he came back with a monster 50g-109pts campaign. I'm not saying any of it is comparable and every situation and player is different, I just have high hopes for the kid. Fell in love with his unforgiveness at Worlds and been a big fan since.

I remember a quote from Michal Handzus about his ACL recovery. He was traded to Chicago and tore his ACL early into the 2006-07 season. He signed a 4 year deal as a free with Los Angeles and struggled immensely in his first season. Fans made him a scapegoat and declared him to be a free agent bust. But he returned to form in the second/third year of his deal. I remember Handzus saying something to the effect of "I was cleared to play 12 months after the surgery but didn't truly feel 100% until 18 months later." Handzus was older, so I'm not sure if that traditionally makes it tougher for recovery.

Hopefully Talvitie can carve out a spot in the AHL. I was hoping he'd be a Brylin-esque role player.

That always seems to be the case with big injuries, players come back when they are told they can, the next year return to form and say I felt like shit last year.

I like that Aarne comes just before Aaron if you sort players first names alphabetically. He's gotta be #1 in the world in this regard.

Going back in Devils' history but after John Maclean's knee injury it was two years before he returned to the level he played at previously (sadly, with the Rangers).

As for Talvitie, he is an exciting prospect with the potential to be a Zajac-like character forward.

Playing for Guy Gadowski and now Mark Dennehy he will be well-schooled by the time he is NHL-ready.

In addition to his injury issues he also returned home to be with his mother during her ultimately fatal illness.

A guy who captained Finland's gold medal team at the WJC.

Should definitely fit with what they are building.

The Anderson trade was not bad because of losing Anderson, but it was bad because the return was a maybe 3rd/4th line talent who is signed to an awful contract. I would not have minded if the Devils packaged in two or three other B-level prospects if the return was someone who could capably play in a top 6 role.
