26 isn't that young either though, and for that discrepancy in talent I don't think you really thought that through.

26 is still pretty young for a top pairing defenceman. They tend to age better than forwards.

Quinn Hughes is only 2yrs and 8 months younger than Chabot
Karlsson is older than Chabot by 6yrs and 8 months

It's quite the difference.
