I blame this loss completely on a 30-40 minute effort instead of a 60 minute one. The first period, as Dineen said himself, was the worst ones of the year. After being down 2-0, once again the team had to battle back. Midway through the 2nd period, I started seeing the "other" team we know as we saw against the Pens last week. The 3rd period until the last few minutes was amazing. However, you can only expect Thomas to hold on for so long when you have a defense that let's up 40 shots a game and you can't clear the puck out of the zone nor win the faceoff there. It's a real bummer of an ending, but when you have to comeback and don't score first, it's not easy to get a win.
I still saw many positives throughout the game. I'm very impressed with Versteeg, Winchester, Bjugstad, and Matthias's efforts. I know we heard bad things about Gilroy from other team's fans, but I really like what I'm seeing from him more every game. Despite his positioning on some of the goals, Thomas had a monster of a game with 37 saves. I'd still say he should start on Saturday. As far as negatives, I really don't understand what's going with Kulikov and think he's in Dineen's doghouse after that 4-minute highsticking penalty. The Campbell/Gilbert pairing needs to be broken up as that's not working either.
If everyone on the team could just play consistently every game, I really don't think we're that bad of a team. It's just if we're going to play for only half the game, how can we expect to get many wins? I think this loss really hurt the boys from the looks on their faces after the game. I kind of expect them to get off to a fast start against the Wild. Well, I hope.
