Marner would be stupid to sign now and as of now he is closer to Pastrnk numbers $6.8MM. I would bet it climbs

How many players on the leafs currently make $6MM+ per year? One! Every member of the team will have to prove they are worth the money. I totally believe that Nylander feels he deserves more than 6. With regards to Kucherov, I don't which party pushed for the bridge. If it was Tampa, the team made a mistake. The comparables would have put him in the $6.5ish range on a long-term deal (instead of a $4.8 a year bridge). Now Kucherov's agent should be seeking $10,000,000+ a season (unless Kucherov wants to take a Stamkos-like hometown discount) which will cover a number of his 30+ years.

The Subban bridge burned Montreal, too. Bridge led to a $9 million a year contract, which would be the equivalent of signing a $10.4 million deal this off-season

I don't think Nylander will turn into Kucherov, but if he gets first team PP time, he could easily be a 70+ point player

I agree with Drewjenks, your projection of Kapanen is utterly ridiculous assuming they don't get promoted next year. He and Johnsson should pull in about the same amount of points given their similiar skill levels and ceilings. I think their combined potential is around 75-85 next year not 60-65 if they are actually given the opportunity. This is of course providing the leafs don't go out and blow their wad on the likes of Kovalchuck and other GUD PROS that the Leafs traditionally overpay and use to block their young talent. If Dubas does that for some reason, then sure, they won't hit their potential and your guess will be correct.

I agree with you on Nylander....but give Kappy more respect than "low 20's".

With good coaching, there might be an up side to 44 pts. I noticed his positioning in the defensive zone is north of the Hash marks. He is always looking for a stretch pass and loses opportunities in breakouts (a bit too much white space between him and the play...hence subject to interception). Babs hates that loosey goosey kind of stuff and will correct it. Based on what I've seen, I believe he isn't living up to his potential if he is short of 50. Less than that is such a waste of talent with that speed.

Keep in mind there’s going to be a gap between what Kapanen is capable of during his prime vs what he’ll do over his first full rookie season. Low 20s was perhaps a bit low of a guess, but if he hits 30-35 points that’s a solid number given the context.

Though I don’t want to derail this thread any further with Kapanen talk. Again, original point was neither he nor Johnsson will ever be able to replicate Nylander offensively.

Steve (his real name) from work told me at lunch today that the Leafs should trade Nylander, our 2018 1st, and Freddy Gauthier for the 1st overall this year. Apparently it's a 5-star proposal on capfriendly, if that's something they do over there.

Much more on topic, Nylander's value is still enormous. I'm hoping that we can get him around $6.5m for 7/8 years. Any dollars less than that is a bonus in my eyes. Willy isn't a guy who's lucked his way into 60 points, he's primed for an absolute explosion when he finally puts his whole game together. There is so much talent there, he has the tools to be a star. I'm expecting him to be a winger this year and then probably move into the C spot next year if the position is available. I think we'll see him challenge for 70 points this year if he's healthy. He's too good of a shooter to only score 20 goals and his PP unit just couldn't figure it out for most of the year. If the Matthews/Nylander PP unit can find even half the success of the Marner unit (or just put all three out there together!) they're all going to stack up the points.

To make a prediction based on the new Leafs management:

I suspect he will be signed for a slightly higher than anticipated amount in order to get him on a 6 to 8 your deal. From some fans there will be initial mild confusion/out rage over it, but within a couple years it will look like a steal.

We saw a similar thing happened with Gardiner a few years ago where a few folks baulked at his 4 million at Aav deal but it turned out to be quite reasonable by the end of his contract.

To make a prediction based on the new Leafs management:

I suspect he will be signed for a slightly higher than anticipated amount in order to get him on a 6 to 8 your deal. From some fans there will be initial mild confusion/out rage over it, but within a couple years it will look like a steal.

We saw a similar thing happened with Gardiner a few years ago where a few folks baulked at his 4 million at Aav deal but it turned out to be quite reasonable by the end of his contract.

I think based on the rising cap, it'd be entirely reasonable to see Nylander end up with the Ehlers contract, but just slightly bumped on the AAV. Something like 7 years, 6.5 mil per.
