If you guys are taking mobility on the 3rd pairing, that is what Calgary will soon be getting from Kenney Morrison. It will be interesting to see his progression through next year.

Like Tim Erixon?
The same Erixon that was waiver fodder this year and picked up by the lowly Leafs?

This idea does not give me an Erixon at all
I pretty sure he was waived to free cap space and a roster spot, it also ensured Erixon could not be traded to a playoff team for depth. Not alot different than when Burke waived Bryz in Anaheim to keep him from going to a playoff team.

Erixon has been on teams with pretty deep blueline talent, especially since being dealt from the Rangers.

I'd rather they go for a 2nd pairing defenseman and bump one of Wideman or Russell to the 3rd pairing. And they may well do that.

That doesn't make sense, why would you waive someone to prevent yourself from trading them to a playoff team.

I don't think we will.

Schlemko-Engelland. There's your 3rd pairing. You can give them 15 minutes. Schlemko can be had for cheap and is as serviceable as someone like Franson.

Smid is probably done. Boomer and Pinder said they've been hearing that on the show this morning. Wotherspoon is at the age here he should probably steal a 3rd pairing spot. Someone will inevitably be injured, and Diaz is good insurance. We could go with the exact same defense we finished the season with, + Gio and minus Potter.

Well first you don't want to trade a player to a team you may face in the playoffs. Second the waiving prevents the new team from trading them to a contender.

I think the way you worded it just sounded really weird.

Bryz and Erix were waived because they weren't needed, not because they didn't want to trade them to contenders, because they can always just not trade them.

The way you worded it sounded like they did it to prevent them from ebing traded, which would be weird casue nobody is forcing them to make a trade lol.

My bad. I know with Bryz he was moved by Burke to give him a chance to play. But trading him to the Coyotes while getting an asset would have made it possible for the Coyotes to flip him at the deadline to a contender. So Burke waived him instead. It was something mentioned at the time and it is something that always stood out to me.

I think Erixon could have been traded, but I think most teams wanted to give up a contract in return and not a pick and since the Hawks had moves they wanted to make they couldn't acquire the contract or cap hit.

If we want to be a 50% corsi team, we need to split up and upgrade our middle pairing. If we're rolling the same middle pairing next year the Flames will continue to be a poor corsi team. Wideman as a #5 + PP specialist is ideal. If we can get one of the farm boys, i.e. Culkin, Wotherspoon, Ramage, Kulak or Morrison to excel, maybe we can move Schlemko up to the middle pairing (Treliving seemed to really want this) with Russell.

Or we can roll

Wideman - Russell
Gio - Schlemko/Diaz/Smid
Brodie - Engelland

Offense from the back end would suffer a bit but not too much. At least then we would be able to roll 3 parings.

huh? That doesn't remotely solve the issue. Every pairing you listed, other than maybe Gio-Schlemko, is still going to get killed on possession, as they did this year. Add to that that Schlemko would be in way over his head on a pairing with Gio against top-shelf competition and you're just asking for trouble.

I'd be okay with;

Gio - Green
Brodie - Engelland
Wideman - Russell

Three solid pairings that can play multiple situations. However, I don't think Green will sign here.

No reason for Brodie to carry Engelland for a full season. Or to split Giordano and Brodie up.

Separating Wideman and Russell makes some sense given it's a valid question whether Wideman can repeat his performance from this season.
