I stopped reading after Markov??? FYI Markov just won the KHL championship. If he wasn't so loyal to the habs he would be on a stanley cup contender right now helping a team win a cup the same way the rest of our castoffs have. Still defending the indefensible? You do YOU and go down with that ship.

Radulov sure showed us....ooops, no playoffs for him

Pateryn sure showed us....ooops, no playoffs

Subban sure showed us.....ooops, out in the second round

Jerabek sure showed us though, he was part of a championship team!!

Markov didn't make the national team, swallow your pill

Not even close anymore...

Houle, as bad as he was, at least showed class and was operating with significant restrictions/limitations.

MB inherited a great situation as far as assets, an ideal situation as far as ownership support and freedom, a top-of-the-league financial situation (ability to spend to cap and spend freely on staffing)... and this is where he has "led" the franchise in 7 years.

he is building a resume that will put him among the worst GM's in league history.
He is now competing with Milbury for worst in league history imo.

Markov???...lol....come on man, He left the nhl and couldn’t even make his own national team for the olympics when no nhl players were going.

-Radulov left and is a Nashville castoff also
-DSP is a NJ castoff (formerly known as Smith-Belly)....and the ridicule that went on when we traded the Czech for him, it was an absolute tragedy, but now it’s a platform for ridicule....come on

-Pateryn......Irrelevant
-Morrow??...

Debrincat and Girard???....Girard is another Nashville castoff.....like your going so many layers deep to find **** lol

We never owned Debrincat
Andrighetto.....ya, ok lol

Galchenyuk, Sergachev, Eller and PK are our castoffs......make fun of that if you want, the rest is a reach.

Still fighting for his boy Bergevin. Admirable.

Gauthier is smelling like a rose compared to your shit stain of a GM, fun times.

I voted Houle, because it will take a couple of years to judge if Bergevin's moves were as bad/worse.

Same thing as making a poll between Crosby and McDavid.

Lol......Bergevin has failed, this has been mentioned by me on numerous occasions. Try to follow

Understatement of the year, he is making people long for the Houle days. Every time he picks up the phone he sets this franchise back. You are still defending him by grasping at his slightly less awful moves, people tend to do that when they are trying to derail the conversation.

Thank god......beautiful pic of Eller holding the cup, happy for the guy!!!

Bet it hurts that it isn’t Subban......

Subban got a nice run in the playoffs which is more than MB will ever get once his plot armor runs out in Montreal.

Good, you can give Subban the nice run in the playoffs cup.......but not for this year

6 seasons, two lottery picks... How much time do you need?

Cmon man you know Geoff loves him ,,,,
MB is not leaving get used to it or get out
I don’t get the impression that Molson loves Bergevin, just that he’s happened to box himself into a corner with that ridiculous, completely unnecessary extension he handed out, and he thinks he can save face (and compensation money) by waiting it out.

Don't forget people that Bergevin, in all his arrogance, was adamant he had improved the club last off season. Then the team went on to have one of the worst seasons in it's history. It seemed everyone but the powers that be in this organization, saw it coming. That's inexcusable in my mind.

I wonder what this board would've been like when the Habs traded:

Vincent Damphousse for a bunch of pics (all of which went to waste... yay Marcel Hossa!)
Mark Recchi for Dainius Zubrus (what??? after everything we gave up to get him in the first place?)
Pierre Turgeon (at age 27!) for Shayne Corson

The Houle years were just traumatic. It felt like as soon as a player was good, he had to be traded because there was no way the Habs can be allowed to have good players. It was a complete and utter destruction of the team. It's just trade after trade after trade that made you want to throw your tv out the window every time.

I mean, was the team so poor that they couldn't afford anybody and had to sell everyone away? I know the canadian dollar was very weak back then but my goodness it was horrible.

Indeed.

Also regarding the Turgeon trade.. we gave up 26 yo Craig Conroy on top of it. We actually gave away, by far, the two best players for a 2nd stint of 30 year old Shayne Corson.

And you don't even have the Roy trade in there.

There's also

Weinrich for Traverse
10th OA for Linden
V. Bure for Hoglund and Zalapski
Odelein for Richer
Daignault for Jablonski
Bellows for Bureau

Every trade was a methodical destruction of the team, block by block. Not even trades where we lose a little bit, or which makes sense in any context.

Even if as per the OP's request we take into account Houle was working with a budget.. then what he should have done is trade players for picks and prospects. Not washed up pros who were plain worse players. Although given how terrible his scouts were drafting, I'm not sure that would have helped us. Ryan 8th OA, Higgins 18th OA, Ward 11th OA, Chouinard 16th, traded away one of our first which would have been 10th OA... so much futility

Bergevin has not been a good GM but let's not act here like he's the worst of all time, not even close to Houle. Anyone saying otherwise is just suffering from recency bias and thinking from a place of emotions. Which is fine if that's what it is... vent steam if you must !

If you look at Bergevin's trades... the main offense is not that we lose out anywhere as bad as the above... it's that it's done without a plan. Taken in a nutshell the trades aren't that bad. But his main offense is to fail to fix the C situation, and make some really Pejorative Slured decisions last summer. Basically the wheels really came off the year he acquired Shaw. After that, everything has been dog shit.

Some GMs build teams and try to get the most out of players. Others blame players for not winning and think that if they just get rid of the right people the team will be great.

Look at MB and Houle's trades. They are generally not done with a purpose, they tend to try to be even one for one trades to get rid of someone they don't like (look, Domi has the same ppg, Weber is a good D like Subban, Drouin is, OK that just sucked). No other GM wants to make an even one for one trade so they take problem players and get hosed.

I don't understand why GMs have to be uneducated, unintellectual ex-players. Ex-agents would make sense, statisticians, negotiators, MBAs... What ability does playing the game provide for GMing? The concussions over the years don't help either.

You do know that last part was refuted, right? They were close on a deal, for much less valuable pieces, but either Brian Lawton, or one of the owners shut it down.
