That black alternate is a mock up of what our jersey will look like when the league goes full jersey ads and Carvel sponsors the Canes. :D

Fauntleroy is Donald Duck's second first name, it is known. But I did not know that his nephews' official names are Hubert, Deuteronomy and Louis.

In the 2017 reboot (which is a lot of fun), their full names are Hubert, Dewford and Llewellyn. This was against their mothers wishes to name them Jet, Turbo and Rebel

So I have previously thought on how I would tweak the jerseys if need be, and this is what I've come up with:

View attachment 572634

Couple changes here.

1 - Use the C with flags in it as the captaincy patch. Stupid that we aren't already doing that. Introduce one for the A that has a similar treatment.

2 - Standardized the width of the flag pattern stripe to that of the current aways, and shrink the black-white-flag-white-black border to the same dimensions of the current black-flags-black stripe on those aways. Same design and dimension on the sleeves, just removing the sublimated flags.

3 - Standardizing aways to be the same stripe pattern of the tweaked homes. Standardized the hurricane logo on the crest of both, and flipped the silver outline to black to create a better visual border.

4 - Flipped the away numbers back to those of the 2013-18 set in order to better balance red and black.

5 - Current 2 flag alternate logo as shoulder patches on both homes and aways as a call back to the original 1997 set.

Thoughts?
Doing a little touchup to this comment to add in the helmet, bloomers and socks after I found a good template for those over the weekend....

I really like the black pants with Svech's current mock ups.

Still not a fan of our current swirl, but if they retain it, two thoughts:
  1. outline it in black (like Svech did) instead of gray. Keeps it from visually shrinking on the white jersey.
  2. keep it oval but make if fatter (maybe 20% ?), along the lines of the original swirl (see below). On the ice ours looks wimpy in comparison to most other teams; fattening it would reduce that effect.
Still say the white jerseys need the black numbers outlined in red. Balances the colors and gives it a dimensional look similar to the home and alternate mock ups.

As fun as it might be to see Cooperalls on the ice, my guess is that the NHLPA would be like "nah bro, those things suck, don't bring them back."

I wonder if they would even be permitted on a safety basis? I've never worn a pair of the originals, but I assume the padding is only a slightly heavier version of roller hockey pants. Personally I would have no interest in finding out what an NHL blocked shot or two-hand slash feels like with those on.

I've never really noticed it, but you're right about our logo seeming proportionally smaller.

At least we're not as tiny as that shitty little forgotten team, NHL.

The safety knock I saw was that the slickness of the Cooperalls at the knee means that when guys go down, they have less of an ability to stop themselves.

I mean, these things were designed for the 1980s.

The cooperalls are worn like a girdle and shell- The pads are an underlayer, not part of the pants themselves. You put on the cooperalls instead of socks and the outer shell, you still have a full set of pads underneath. Really, they're just nothing more than track pants.

Ah, TIL. I always thought the padding was built in.

I compared a game used 2016 jersey I have to a Starter jersey I got during the Canes first year down here in NC.

You aren't imagining things, our logo shrank during the 'New Storm' rebrand in 2013. Went from 15" x 8.5" to 12.5" x 6.5". They compensated for this by flattening the angle of the logo itself to ensure it took up the same width on the jersey before and after.

From a design standpoint, the extra tilt also gave it that "moving forward" lean which shows up in other logos (Flyers, Devils, Preds, etc.)

I remember this was a big topic of the Carolina Panthers logo design, they really wanted it to seem like it was leaning forward to convey motion. Pats and Jags did something similar around the same era.

Its interesting.... I actually think they made the right call in flattening it. You look back at some of those older jerseys and its actually a bit of a severe slant to the point where it doesn't really look good compared to now. It almost looks like it was put on wrong.

So I think the current angle is fine. The design of the logo itself does more than enough to convey motion, I just wish they would enlarge it just a bit.

But then you get into the other issue we have now. The current form fitting cut of the jerseys, as opposed to what it was in the 90s, means that the edges of the logo fold awkwardly around the arms.

This is part of the reason why I think the current alternates are good, because they're a real good fit for the current trim.

It's funny how perceptions differ. To me you either need a decent tilt or to keep it level. Just a bit of a slant is what makes it look like it was sewed on wrong, at least to my eyes.

My suggestion to "fatten" the logo eliminates the problem with it folding around the arms. The widths in the photos below are the same, I just increased the logo height by 20% in the second one.
