Probably because everyone should know he has no idea how long Wheeler will be out and only a moron would think he does.
Gonna have to agree to disagree here. The sports reporters in this city, while almost all generally terrible, are just doing their jobs trying to get an update on a Jets player, and given that Maurice is often in contact with Jets doctors and in contact with the media, it makes sense to ask him.

But Maurice can’t give more than he has been told. And when a player is getting multiple medical opinions it should be obvious he wouldn’t know how long he will be out.

Beaulieu as a forward... :thumbu:

I mean, at what point does a GM step in and intervene.

Edit: This may be just for practice purposes.

One of my favourite subjects is revisionist history. It's important when we look back at this year that we dissect it properly.

Jets started out 0-2 in Cali with Scheif missing one game, and Svetchnikov missing one game, and Perfetti getting in both.

Game 3 in Minny Scheif and Wheeler are on protocol and Beaulieu get the call while Perfetti is sat out. Jets lose in OT, but should have won this one (if anyone remembers the offside that cost the EN goal).

Beaulieu plays in games 4 to 7 instead of Perfetti. Toninato also gets in the lineup, in place of Wheeler. All wins.

Game 8 Wheeler comes back, Nash comes out, loss in OT in San Jose.

Game 9 Scheifele comes back, Vesalainen comes out, Jets win in OT at home vs. Dallas

Game 10 Jets rout the Hawks.

Jets record with Beaulieu in the lineup after 10 games, 6-0-2.

Game 11 Jets lose a tough game to NY Isles, every one is off it seems.

Beaulieu sits for all but 1 of the next 13 games (edit/correction: He played in the November 26th Minnesota Wild 7-1 rout of the Jets). Jets record over that span 6-5-2 (6-4-2 without Beaulieu). Special teams are a factor in several of those losses.

Game 25-27 Pionk is out, Beaulieu draws in, Jets go 1-1-1. Carolina game was a dud, 2 shorthanded goals the difference. No special teams GA vs. Kraken or Canucks.

So the Jets record by math is 6-2-2 with 7 d. 0-2 with Perfetti. 7-3-3 with Beaulieu in the lineup. 6-7-2 with 12 forward, 6 d.

I’m not sure what point you are trying to make with all of this. That Beaulieu is better than Perfetti? That the Jets should always run 11 F and 7D?

So to me, the question should be asked:

Why does my coach have a losing record icing a lineup like every other coach in the NHL?

It's not that the player is better, but that he addresses a critical issue, the PK. Beaulieu's metric is the best on the team for any regular defenseman averaging over a minute. Morrissey is the best, but he has been deployed at best as a 2nd unit regular, or a 2nd unit fill in.

Perfetti had a nice string of 0s in his scoresheet, followed by a -2. Which to me told me at the beginning of the year he wasn't ready. Obviously when we first saw Kyle Connor in the NHL he wasn't ready either, so there is an adjustment, and you can only hope that Perfetti follows a similar flight path to Connor.

Should the Jets run 11 forward, 7 d? I don't know. To coach this way you are not just rolling lines. You have to have a pulse on your team, when a player is running hot, how to manage ice times, with extra ice time available. I like it. Because it puts a player like Beaulieu in the 5 minute range, which is not overplaying him, but just playing him enough to keep him engaged, and prepared for his primary responsibility. It forces the coach to coach more, and not just turn over the same thing shift in shift out. Double shifting, which isn't something Maurice does much, for the amount of ice time he distributes, can be an art of winning a weaker matchup, especially with the skill level the Jets boast.

It wasn't necessarily a response to you either, but more of a stat correction that the sky falls when a certain player is in the lineup. Which I think requires further analysis. Because the 10-15 minute mark seems to be where Beaulieu will show negative results, more frequently. Still even with -s beside his name, a negative Corsi, the Jets record with him is better than without him, and that's one of those things that maybe defies logic, or there is something being missed.

Anyways this is a Wheeler discussion, and all I am discussing is how to fill the void, so I don't want to get sideways.

If Wheeler is out of the lineup for over 2 months, we can see a dramatic change in the Jets chemistry, depending on how the team performs. If the Jets go on a tear, and start competing for the division title, then all the critics of the "clique" (Wheeler, Scheifele, Maurice) were correct, and the team may want to part with Wheeler, fire Maurice, and get Sheif out of his comfort zone. Nobody will be able to deny that Maurice plays favorites, if Wheeler returns during the final stretch of games, and immediately assumes his first line role.

As much as I never want to see a Jets player (especially the captain of the team), injured, I can honestly say I would not be at all surprised to see the Jets go on a run until Olympic break.

I'll give you credit you really like Beaulieu but to me you are missing the fact we were winning games and playing great 5 on 5 when Scheifele and Wheeler were out of the lineup and when they were on the 3rd line with Lowry . That was because during that time we were distributing the ice times of all our lines really well . Then for reasons only known to Maurice Svech gets taken off the #1 line and Wheeler is put there , Scheifele is moved to the 2nd line and both Wheeler and Scheifele's ice times start getting higher and higher. Then Scheifele, Wheeler and Connor gets put back together because we are losing games and Dubois and Ehlers's ice times both go down and Svech is 4th line eating popcorn. I don't have a problem with Scheifele, Wheeler and Connor as a line, they can be very good but i think if we distributed our ice times more evenly this is a much better team and playing Beaulieu or not has very little to do with team success or failure, to me anyway.

I suspect they could provide a bit more clarity if they wanted to. The organization stating weeks as opposed to months leads me believe it's a strain as opposed to a ligament tear. Also if it was a tear, they would most likely have the diagnosis .....so why not just say so.

Winnipeg Jets captain Blake Wheeler will be sidelined multiple weeks with a lower-body injury, coach Paul Maurice confirmed Monday.

This is as much information that needs to be given according to NHL protocols.

For sure, a player like Beaulieu is better adapted to the passive shooting gallery that is our PK - that does not mean it’s sustainable

Yep. And a series of sturdy lawn-chairs set up along the hashmarks (but not, god forbid, in the shooting lanes) might just be even better at "playing" that PK system than Beaulieu, and cheaper. And arguably even better at transition, since we'd see some heavy bounces out of the zone.

Tucker Poolman regularly ranked as among our best PKers for a while, but do we mourn his departure for VAN?

My feeling is that a better PK will optimize our better overall defenders, instead of defaulting to a PK-specialist Beaulieu being hit by a lot of pucks.

Hopefully with all these bold new emphasis on aggression and rapidly moving feet we are moving towards an overall more efficient system which will cycle though more and fresher players and reduce reliance on the OK Corral system which requires a full-time shot blocker to power its way to the 31st best PK in the league.

Wheeler has played 758 games for the Jets, leaving 56 games missed. The correlation between Wheeler not playing and that being the cause of the Jets losing any of those games is random and involves many more variables than Wheeler simply not playing. The attempts to simplify this and draw some sort of direct or indirect correlation is ridiculous.
I remember this same idiotic discussion with Enstrom.
X caused Y therefore X was the only cause of Y.

Of course.

You are debating with me over things I never said. Just for a start, we weren't without Wheeler alone. We were without both Wheeler and Scheifele. And I never said that being without them caused us to win. Never implied it or in any way suggested it either.

However I will say that we were without those 2 key players and managed to cope with the absence. Therefore I am speculating that we will cope with the absence of Wheeler if he is out long term.

The team seems to band together and play hard when they're expected to lose (key players injured, defence gutted, etc.) and mail it in when they're at full compliment and expected to win. Seems to be a team psychology thing. I don't attribute it to individual players.

I suspect that all teams do that - with varying degrees of success.

It seems like Maurice tightens up his system when a star or two are injured - much less freewheeling so it reduces high danger chances on both sides - our first playoff year was like that - simple hockey because of injuries and then we opened it up whe n everyone was healthy for the playoffs and got pounded

You would think an MRI would show any soft tissue damage, which would include tears, or partial tears of ligaments etc. I did read about a tennis player who had a tear in the rotator cuff in the shoulder, and this was missed by a couple MRI's or they were not diagnosed properly. This player went to see a 3rd surgeon who was well respected shoulder specialist, and he did find a very small tear with his MRI, and fixed the problem with surgery. This very small tear, was missed by 2 others.

It could be that Wheeler was told there was not tears etc, and he would just have to rehab, but he may feel he wants a second opinion to make sure. Maybe if he has a torn ligament he would want it fixed right the first time with surgery. Could also be, as mentioned, he was told he has a torn ligament and needs surgery, but wants it confirmed "for sure." I think that's the way I'd go on this type of situation.

Hmm. I will see your unsupported speculative musings and raise you a "this could become an Eichel situation".

I mean it is easier to practice as a forward when you need an extra one right? And correct me if I am wrong but the Jets have a better record this year with 7 d, and 11 forwards (the Cooper TB successful model) than with the standard model.

I can see some advantage in playing 11F. You can give some better players a little more TOI (if they aren't already being overused :naughty: ). If the 7th D (Beaulieu) is only used on the PK he probably isn't doing any harm, might even help a bit.

It is missing an opportunity to give a prospect some NHL TOI, which may help the team win and/or may help that prospects development.
