My biggest beef with how some... some... use them is that they are presented without any context. And ironically, most times without any qualification as to whether the stats themselves meet any kind of test statistical significance (p values,r2, t tests,etc).

The discussion generally goes:

A: This team is at a 49.8 and this team is at 48.8. Therefore not as good.

B: Do you know if the difference in values is statasitically significant in any way?

A~ Um, you don't understand stats

So yes I agree there are charts. It's just when there aren't charts that I'm bothered by it.
