I don't really have a problem with the two year length, by the end of the two years Kopi will either be done or HOPEFULLY be going back to the 3rd line center position. Doughty will be even less effective, the short window will be just about closed anyway and they'll likely be starting another rebuild or a big retool.

The biggest downside is in 2 years when the window closes they won't be able to flip him for an asset from a contending team at the time.

But for the most part they are in a good spot with guys when that time comes, especially Kempe and Fiala who's full NMC's move to limited ones in two years.

Trade Durzi this summer and give Bjornfot a legitimate shot till the trade deadline. Maybe even carry 8 D.

Bjornfot Doughty
Gavrikov Roy
Anderson Clarke

Moverare Spence
I think they did give him a legit shot, he played 70 games in 21-22, they just don't like him. The way he has been handled the last 15 months or so doesn't look like the way a team would handle a player they believed in. He didn't play in the playoffs in 21-22 while guys like Stetcher and Moverare did, they brought back the corpse of Edler to play over him in 22-23 and now they have signed Anderson and Gavrikov.

Toby should have been moved at this time last summer for a 2nd round pick, just insane to expect a player who had played the previous two seasons in the NHL making close to a mill a year to go down to the AHL, paying for peanuts, it was a ridiculous development decision then and looks even worse now.

Agree 100%- we may not even have seen the best of Gav yet given he played most of his career on a lousy team going nowhere. Now, he's playing for a big pay day in two years and has every incentive to improve his already very strong game. I like this deal from the King's perspective- we get two prime years at a fair price, have the opportunity to resign him if appropriate and can flip him at the deadline in two years if we need to- players always wave their NMCs if they are sent to a destination they approve of. Plus, Gav and his family may fall in love with Manhattan Beach.

I'd rather have had 3-4 years, but agree with this. 2 years gives us a pretty good window to make some exciting things happen. If Blake can pull off some other moves and the salary cap goes up like everyone expects, have a really good opportunity to do some damage in the playoffs.

All of these moves are pointing to either one of two things.

The Kings are delaying the inevitable which is going to be a full rebuild. There’s no first line center yet and Byfield likely tops out at a 3C so they need to rebuild again.

Or they actually go all in on Matthews to try to fix the problem.

I think a rebuild is much more likely.
Dude, you gotta put the pipe down.

Guessing that Bjornfot will get a look in that spot IF another deal is not made to address it.
Anderson-Doughty
Bjornfot-Roy
Gavrikov-Clarke

I would be okay with it, but Tmac doesn't seem to like Bjornfot.

Also that D group lacks a bit of size/toughness.

Is there a higher cost, lower ceiling top 4 D in the league than the Kings?

$24M for

Anderson Doughty
Gavrikov Roy

What’s the identity here? Doesn’t look like a bunch of big lads who can clear the crease. Can’t see this collective being able to figure out forechecks and make consistent breakout passes. Cale Makar will probably outscore the group by himself. Only thing that stands out to me is breaking up plays at their blue line. Which is fine for the regular season, but easy to defeat in the playoffs, which the Kings have proven two years in a row by playing the 1-3-1 during pressure situations.

And then Durzi and I guess Clarke are the depth guys getting 8 mins a night at even strength? Toby and Spencey round out the mix? Just a hodgepodge of decisions that leads to what? Another ring for Kopi and Dewy?

I get fans drinking the purple koolaid. But looks like management has busted through the wall now. This has to be fallout from Vegas about to win a cup with a bunch of ex Kings. No other explanation for the accelerant over the past two days that BLuc has poured into burning down every good thing from 2006 to April 2017.

They could also clear up space and acquire future assets for him and just sign a LHD to fill that spot.

Ryan Graves, Brian Dumoulin, Carson Soucy, Ian Cole, and Niko Mikkola would help upgrade the blueline if the Kings can pluck any one of them.

Give me some Carson Soucy!

I thought he'd be an easy re-sign with Seattle but even Kraken fans are saying he's a bit expendable in their lineup given Dunn needs a big contract and they already have a big LD in Oleksiak. Also he could be had for relatively cheap (was on a 3 year contract at $2.75/yr)

With Karikov signed, we really need that 1 more big body on LD for this team.

Considering how short-term the deal is, money isn't too bad for a top 4 dmen. And I'd prefer to give a little more money over 2 years and avoid giving him a long term deal that takes him into his mid 30s

I guess you could roll Bjornfot with Roy instead of Clarke, but I'm really diggin' Gavrikov and Roy together. It's like getting the band back together that didn't suck!

He may very well be here for 4 years, or 6 years, or 10 years. Just because he's not locked up long term now doesn't mean it was all for just 2 years. He had told CBJ he would test UFA, was traded here and liked it enough to forgo UFA and try a little longer stay. We'll have a pretty good chance of extending him when the contract does expire.

Alternatively, if we suck, we can trade him as he nears UFA and recoup assets.
Valid points, it will feel like as soon as the season starts, we'll be wondering who will fill the hole if he's not resigned the following year. As everyone mentioned, Blake moved heaven and earth to sign him, kind anticlimactic it was only two years ..lol

There are people on this board with inside information because i thought Gavrikov would wait until free agency before he signed. But i'm happy he signed, if the Kings lost him they would be in big trouble. Now Hopefully Blake can find a tough hard hitting LD to add to the D core.

It all depends what they supplement that core with. You have 4 guys there that can play great defensive hockey. Doughty can still move the puck and I think both Gavrikov and Roy are underrated in that department. You are right none have massive size and none are what I would call PP specialists.

Add Clarke into the mix as an offensive wizard, PP specialist. Entry level contract.

Add a guy with size like Soucy in there and that is a great 6 defenseman that can be paired or tailored to any situation. It would be 10X better then what we started last year with and probably 5 times better than what we ended with.

Trade a redundant forward to make Soucy work.

I’ve seen Arvy’s name floating around but I’d rather move AI. We’ll be in trouble without Arvy
Why is that? PD and TO drive that line.. Arvy would net the highest return out of him or AI.. package him with Durzi and we could get $5mill in cap space, a late 1st or multiple 2nds and it gives one if Vilardi, Kaliyev or a rookie a shot

Annnnd, we don’t have to worry about him not being able to clear pucks out of the zone in pressure situations!

The path was painful and somewhat costly....but Gavrikov is 80% better than Chychrun, McCabe, or the other deadline defensemen. He's tremendous. Period. He was on the oce for a few ES goals in the reg season...made Roy look like an allstar and Roy vice versa make Gavrikov look like an allstar....

and EVERY time Gavrikov activated, was more dangerous than ANY KING FORWARD, not named Kopitar, Fiala, Kempe. He's a star. Period. With more offensive upside...McCabe was like -8 for the Leafs in the playoffs! Chychrun pretty much is meh and will always have injuries. Was plus 5 vs Edmonton...going on memory...while DD and Mikey were minuses. Gav is the best defensemen on the Kings....PLEASE give Clarke some time with him, in preseason.

I'd love to see Gavrikov get some PP time and activate more. He had 8 goals and 25 assists a few seaosns ago.

Hate Blake. I don't care. But getting Danault, Arvidsson, Fiala, Gavrikov (Copley and Korpisalo?) has made this team better.
Sure, he's made some blunders.
Thanks for a detailed review, but I would not recommend using him on PP, his point shot is pretty terrible and his passing inside the offensive zone is very limited and not creative at all, he won’t help much on PP

The Kings won't win the cup anytime soon so do you think its time to trade Drew Doughty? I would like to see your opinions.

I'm not sure the term isn't something Blake pushed or was fine with given he's been burnt on plenty of others with longer term. I don't have a problem with it because it gives him incentive to perform. If the Kings shit the bed next year there's still a chance they can recoup some assets moving him then.

I don't like to judge a book by a cover but when I saw his wife in the stands I figured he was going to stay. I can't imagine she didn't have some say in him at least considering offers before Ufa. In sure they're both digging the south bay more than Columbus.

Wouldn't matter what we think, I doubt Blake and Doughty share this opinion :P He's definitely going nowhere while Blake intends to compete.
