Can’t believe Vegas paid significantly less for Hill from the Sharks than the Avs did for Georgiev from the Rangers. Even excluding value, he traded Hill below market value to his rival in dire need of an NHL caliber goalie
That was market value for Hill. The demand for him wasn't there.

Why? So they can carry three goalies into the season, watch Adin get injured again and then basically pay him 2 million for 6 games and then lose him for nothing?
They got nothing. Maybe they get more at the trade deadline if they keep him and he does a decent job this season.

Vegas needed a goalie. There is no immediate need to trade Hill unless they are hoping to get more for Reimer later on, No one is giving Vegas a goalie. Montreal would want a 1st for Allen. Even if someone else is willing to give Vegas a goalie for a 4th who cares. 4th's are no big loss.

Agree. A complete incompetent. A 4th is worthless. Should have told Vegas to get lost for less than a 2nd.

SJ couldn't really do that... they had their own cap issues. They're fine till Labanc comes back, but at some point were going to need to shed cap. Kind of hard to turn down a deal where they get a mid pick and don't take on any cap for a goalie that they don't need who has minimal value.

They got nothing. Maybe they get more at the trade deadline if they keep him and he does a decent job this season.

SJ likely couldn't wait that long due to the cap. And it's very hard trying to run three goalies, especially getting all three practice time. And while keeping him (and hoping him or Reimer gets hurt enough to go onto LTIR) is a potential scenario, it's also one that kills the trade value and just means that SJ wasted 2.7 million dollars when they could have traded him for cap space, got a mid pick back and been done with it. That's pretty high risk to try and get a 2nd or 3rd vs just taking the 4th and getting him off the books. We as fans may only think of the cap implications, but GMs, especially GMs of teams with less revenue then most also have to deal with budgets and not just the cap. And 2.7 million for a #3 goalie is a waste of money for almost every team in the league.

And while no one disputes the idea that mid picks have fairly low rates of producing NHL players, they do occasionally produce some, so it's quite possible that 4th could turn into something.

Makes sense for the Sharks , Hill became redundant when they aquired Kahkonen and if Brossoit is still injured i guess Vegas needs another goalie. But isn't Hill kind of expensive for a stopgap backup ? They have Hutchinson already signed . Unless Brossoit really misses alot of time i don't get why they aquired Hill. He was bad last year.

They just traded 3rd string goalie for a 4th while shedding 2 mils in cap and that's "barely getting market value"? What are people smoking in here? He was going on waivers AND had an unattractive contract. The actual market value here is conditional 7th for some teams and "even if I had a stick I'm not touching that" for most.

AZ fan here

Adin Hill is bad. He's tall and extremely athletic, but his fundamental angles are off. Before Hill have literally never seen a goalie make the NHL (or even a good college program) without understanding basic angles / positioning, yet here is Adin Hill with stats that are somehow within band.

Obvi I hope I am wrong / Hill does well
You're a Arizona Coyotes fan and you hope that a Golden Knights goalie is successful? What?

As anyone reasonable predicted, Vegas fills their goaltending vacancy with either Varlamov or one of SJ's three goalies. Exactly what happened.

Lehner and Weber are on LTIR. They have tons of LTIR room.

They need a backup. Lehner is pretty much out for the year and Brossoit is injured too.

For how long ? Hill is not cheap at $2,175M . Couldn't Vegas just rolled with Hutchinson ( who they have signed ) or one of their signed prospects as backup for Thompson until Brossoit is ready ? Now they have to waive somebody who is owed more than what waivers provide in cap relief or send Thompson to the AHL once Brossoit is ready ( or make another move )

Hutchinson is not an NHL goalie. And Vegas obviously isn't too confident in Brossoit. They wanted some goaltending insurance and got it.

They don't have cap issues. Between Weber, Lehner, and Patrick on LTIR, Vegas will be able to exceed the cap by $14.2 million if used correctly. Their current payroll is $92.7 million with Hill, and they only have Hague to sign.

Value doesn't exist in a vacuum. While everyone knew Vegas was in need of a goaltender, everyone also knew San José had a logjam of them. All things considered, I'd say a 4th for Hill is fair value.

Meanwhile, this is not franchise mode on xbox. What people needs to realize is that GM's aren't just managing contracts and cap space. They are managing people with families, homes, hopes and dreams.

Grier is giving Hill, a 26 year old netminder in his prime years, a chance to play. Keeping him around as the #3 goalie, only so that he (maybe) could return a 3rd round pick instead of a 4th one day, would be such a dick move.

Great. Now Vegas has three goalies who can't do the job.

They just need a fusion dance.
