I saw one game of Russia's team.

Askarov stood on his head. He outplayed Knight, who is the best goalie in the 2019 draft, and a likely first rounder. Askarov is the best player in the 2020 draft, but goalies aren't going to be picked in the top 5-10. I think there has to be serious consideration for him to be picked in the first half of the first round in 2020. I could see some justification to take him in the 11-16 range.

what's the ceiling for this roster? I completely lost track of junior hockey.

I think Russia are tied for third favorites going into the tournament with Canada, and behind the USA and Finland. USA are the big favorites, but its junior hockey, so its unpredictable. For Russia to win, I think Askarov is going to have to be the best goalie at the tournament. I think Russia has good forward depth in this team, but lacks big names defensively.

Russia wins 5-1. Overall not a very good game imo, though Sweden also didn't have too an easy a time with Latvia.

An easy 6-3 win for the USA. Only great goaltending from Askarov stopped Russia from being blown off the ice. The USA's superior speed and conditioning had Russia gasping for breath, and they maintained full control of the puck in the Russian defensive zone from beginning to end. After another easy 6-1 win over Sweden and Finland's poor play, it looks like it will come down to the USA vs. Canada for the Gold medal. Russia has a chance at a Bronze medal, but they will have to play better at both ends of the ice to achieve that.

Thanks, Captain Obvious, for saying US is favourite to win the tournament:). Your take on Canada though...

As for the russian team. Look up the team actually. Those defencemen aren't going to win anything. Some promising forwards though. And Askarov wasn't that brilliant. Could have stopped a pair, while obviously not all of them. And it wasn't an easy win at all for the US btw. Stomping Sweden was an easy win.

It was definitely not a pretty sight. Perhaps an irony of fate that the US team now plays something close to "Tarasov hockey" whereas the Russian team looks more like a "dump and chase" North American team from the 70s. Hopefully they'll be able to reverse this trend at some point. However, obviously the environment for young hockey players in the US is significantly better than in Russia, especially if one looks only at the economical component.

The economical component? What would that be? The enivironment is defined by continuing incompetence of the ones in charge who can't start building a thought through developing structure.

We must be on a mind meld, because I was thinking exactly the same thing. If you look at video from the 70's and 80's of the Soviet era, it is exactly the reverse of what we are seeing now. Back then, it was the Soviet teams that had the superior conditioning, had total control of the puck, and used speed and combinational play to swamp the opposition in their own zone. Now it is the Americans, and frankly, the Russians looked a bit defenseless against the Americans. Not the coach's fault, the team was just overwhelmed by that level of competition. And you are right, the lack of money feeds the absence of organization, training, and good coaching. There is no organization in Russia today that is similar to Soviet times in demanding and building hockey excellence. There are no Tarasovs to contest for Gold medals in World Championships, unfortunately.

Boys to men, that's how I would describe the USA - Russia game. No comparison...How many people playing in the CHL/USHL and free of play offs have not been called up? Can we even complain about it anymore?
