I warned you. He basically told everyone he only cared about this season because of the contract.

He's all done, he's checked out. He'll never be that player again, He's back to maybe PPG if you are lucky.

I'm guessing 0.8p/game from signing the contract to the end of the season. He'll pick up a bit in the playoffs though, he cares a little more about that.

He’s probably slightly above a PPG player like last year and that’s still a good player. But he’s got paid based on half a season of elite play. These type of deals are always a huge risk when the players don’t have a history of elite play.

They Leafs offered it to him he said no. They then explore trade options, with 1 year left it's not going to worth it. The only way to get large return is to move him at the TDL, which the Leafs don't have the stones to do in preparation for their inevitable playoff exit.
That's just bad. So you pay because you have to? Lol.

Capspace have true value. Teams pay good picks to teams to retain some salary. Letting him walk was fine option.

It's going to be a rough 8 years for Nylander, with a 11.5M cap hit starting next year, if he is not producing consistently, 4th straight game without a point since signing the big contract, he's going to be under a microscope. The bar he has set for himself is a high one. He needs to be well over a PPG to justify his contract. Hard to believe this guy will be making just 1M less than McDavid and Mackinnon next year.

6 on 5 last night and he managed to:

1. Fail to hold the blue line and kill the offensive pressure.
2. Blindly pass it back to a defender that wasn't there, sending it all the way back behind his own net.

Those are the plays that earn you $92M.

Are people here really worried that after four bad games he's cashing out and calling it in for the next 8 years? Or are we all just busting on Leaf fans?

Go with a mix of both.

He's not a bum. He's also not a Top 5 producer that he conveniently was able to play as right up until the point that the ink dried.

Leafs core..........seem to worry about just one thing...................winning is not the big concern, getting paid is...................Nylander is having a huge year so far, but very strange he has not produced since signing his biggest lifetime contract........
Next year their cap is going to be even uglier. Pay their big 5 and everyone else gets table scraps....it has not worked yet,, so who knows, keep trying eh.

You have to give credit to Nylander’s agent. The guy should hold a masterclass in negotiating. He got the Leafs to agree 6 years ago on December 1 to have Nylander higher paid than his comparables at the time Pastranak, Ehlers, and Larkin. Puts up a 27 pts season after signing. 2nd time around Nylander signs, will make more than Pastranak and Tkachuk. Who I doubt any GM would take Nylander over, that will also put him within of 1M of the best 2 players in the game in Mackinnon and McDavid. Give his agent credit, that is highway robbery.

And he'd be around 60 points on any other team in the league lol. Honestly it is an overpay, 10.5M is fair value IMO but we did lock him up for 8 years with the cap going up. It realistically could jump up 6M in 1 years time.

I'm happy to pay our star guys to keep them though, he would've gotten something ridiculous like that on the open market anyways.
Seeing the Nylander deal, what is the next Marner deal? Marner has out produced WN every year except this one so far. If Nylander is worth 11.5 does that put Marner in the $12+ range?

There won't be another Marner deal. Let his ass walk he isn't worth it. No show in the playoffs, pissy attitude and extremely inconsistent with a bad work ethic. He's not a guy you can win with. He needs to go.

If you're basing on internal cap structure, hes should get paid more than nylander. Hes better historically. But on the open market, unless its a bad team with lots of cap, contenders are not lining up to give marner 12M. No contender can afford that if they wanna beat a team like Boston with a better winger (Pasternak) at 11M.

Nylander is the floor. Matthews is the real comparable. Last time:

Matthews, 11.634x5
Marner, 10.893x6

This past summer, Matthews 13.25x4. Marner gave up an extra year last time. With the pathetic 4 year term on this contract, Marner will want to be compensated for anything above 3 years. This is how poorly the Leafs have run their operation.

Two things are still very true reading this thread.

1) Like them or hate them, no team moves the needle more than the Leafs in the NHL. Everyone just can't help themselves talking about the team more than any other team.

2) Leafs Derangement Syndrome is still alive and well....

Marner better put in a significantly better offseason this year, he looks to have significantly regressed this year, his skating in particular is awful.

Leaf fans'/team's derangement drives the interest for other fans and the media. If the fan base was more rational, it wouldnt be as interesting.
