Good job by Dubas in cleaning up the cap problem created by that contract. It will be interesting to see what he does with the Zaitsev contract.

You do know that Dubas didn’t sign Marleau or Zaitsev?

What do you think Dubas should have done with Marleau?

THis issue is something which a smart GM would had seen coming the moment the Leafs signed Tavares... And became an obvious issue with the Nylander/Matthews blunders new contracts.

This is an issue which very likely could had been solved for cheaper in the past... But Dumbas waited until the entire league knew that the Leafs are desperate to get rid of those contracts, and paid a big ransom because of this.

Also, I found it interesting that Dubas said just couple days ago about Marleau

"I don't sense there's any real pressure. We'll continue to do what's right for the organization and go from there."

""If Patrick Marleau were back with the Toronto Maple Leafs at the beginning of next year, it wouldn't be a problem for Patrick. There's a strong chance he'll be back next season."

He probably though that by doing this his "genius" will fool some other GM's, but everyone knew that he is cornered and teams were out for blood.

I'd personally take the Darling hit and adjust the lower end salaries. Think he was 1.2, 2.2, 1.2, 1.2 if I remember correctly (bought out) then you're shaving costs in your bottom 6/pair/backup instead of losing a first

They literally are not going to have that 1.2 million to spare. They already are going to struggle to get all of Marner/Kapanen/Johnsson under the cap, and that's with Marleau's entire cap hit gone.

That’s a heck of a price to get out of the the final year of the contract but definitely not shocking. You aren’t going to have a team pick up $6M for the year for nothing especially when that player is 40 and you have to rid yourself of that salary. Had to be done.
6 mil is 6 mil. If not for the cap 6 mil buys a top D

Leafs have not won in 50 yrs. They are trying to go for one now and maybe another 50 yrs for another one since they have no good pick left lol

It worked for the Raptors, only problem is the Leafs have no Kawhi

I'm not surprised it costed that much to move Marleau. Not every ownership group is like Toronto where money seems infinite. It's one thing to look at it like a video game, where the dollars are monopoly money to you, but to ask an owner of another team to pay millions just for a draft pick... it better be a great draft pick! That goes double for the teams out there who have cap space, who are most often the least wealthy out there in real dollars (never mind cap dollars)

No - but he did sign Tavares. With all this offensive fire power, did Leafs need Tavares? He's the cap buster.

What did you think was going to happen once you commit half your cap to 4 forwards?

Dubas got/is getting owned by Nylander, Matthews and soon Marner. Doesn't seem to have the intestinal fortitude to go to the wall when he has the hammer.

Dubas is so terrible, bottom 5 gms in the league, its amazing how he gets bullied like the lil schoolkid in the yard already. These contracts and trades are great fun

I enjoy laughing at the Leafs’ misfortunes as much as anyone, but there was no way any gm in the league would have been able to move that contract without giving up a premium asset. Too much money was owed. He did it without giving up Kapanen and Johnsson. And, if those numbers are correct for their contracts, this was a good series of moves.

He literally pushed a RFA negotiation to 10 minutes until the deadline and is now battling a beloved hometown star who is publicly courting offer sheets in an unprecedented move for a RFA. No intestinal fortitude lol

No team should ever turn down a player like Tavares.
Unfortunately he had to trade a 1st to get rid of a contract.
If this team doesn’t win the cup this year Dubas will make other moves to try and get it done. It doesn’t have to be this year. Sometimes it takes time to finish the process but now that Kapanen and Johnsson are basically signed Marner is left. The whole core of the team is basically there and next year he can work on the defence if he doesn’t this year.

This is a terrible trade for the Leafs. According to TheWinterSailor the Leafs just traded the first overall for 1 year capspace....LOLZ! (am I doing this right?)

I believe most thought it would take 2 x 2nd rounders to move the contract, but with the cap coming in lower than expected the price went up.

The likelihood of that pick being as good or better than Kap or AJ is low so it's a calculated low percentage risk. Also that pick is likely 3+ years away from making an NHL roster which also has to factor into the decision.

People just want to find something to attack the Leafs on. It's sad really.

Going rate probably would have been their 2nd if they waited till after July 2 but didn’t know for sure a trade for Marleau would still exist. Just took the sure thing and can’t blame them. Got fair value for the cap space it seems.

I believe they had to trade him before July 1st for him to be eligible to later sign with the Sharks for this season. May have been the only way to get him to waive the NMC.
