Bottom 2 lines for the Comets doing a lot of dump and chase.

Now the Comets back to the PP at 7:38. No shorties guys!

Comets back to the PK. Wiercioch for slashing. Love tap on the stick blade and his stick went flying. Bit of an acting job. AHL refs never seem to recognize fakery.

1:30 left and Leighton can't get out. Makes a save and holds on. 1:15 left.

Archi, Chaput, and Goldobin coming on. Not sure about Nikolay here. That
is primarily why he got sent down. Learn to play D.

COMETS WIN!!!! 3-2 and .500 on the season at 2-2.

IMO Demko the star again tonight.

Chants of U-TI-CA rain down from the Syracuse Memorial Auditorium seats. Good sized Utica bunch on hand throughout the Auditorium as usual.

Demko clearly stole a couple of points here. Was great and made one incredible save in the third.

Other players that showed well

Subban - starting to play very well. Rushed the puck with authority and consistently broke wide around the defense and made good shots of net which create some chaos around the net. Got back well and used quickness to force play in his end. Best of the defense IMO in this game. Helped that he was playing with Weiricoch who, while a little too casual at times, was steady in his end and used his reach well

Goldobin - lots of skill. Has great wrist shot and real vision to see the play. Needs to be harder on the puck but with Boucher is the class of the forwards. Trouble is they have a plug like Bancks (can't seem to skate with his head up) at center so much of what Goldobin or Boucher do goes no where. Be interesting to see these player with a center that could create space. Really the general problem with the team. Have some decent wingers but nothing in the middle.

Others

Holm - collected some points but like others guilty of losing the puck on the PP and giving away clear breakways and odd man rushes. PP, in general, was a mess and mostly couldn't get the puck into the offensive zone. Got a couple of goals but that was not indicative of how PP operated. Holm seems a little better but still getting beat on the rush

Chatfield - continues to show well given his inexperience. Not all that noticeable but shows he can skate the puck out of trouble and make quick smart plays. Shows promise

DAoust - playing better and getting some chances. Still very fringe at this level

Megna -continues to get little done. Gets chances but does nothing with them. Not really center but no one else to put there. Wonder if he could be traded for someone who can distribute the puck a little better. (-3 with no points so far)

Chaput - mucks around and creates forchecking pressure. However, in ability to make plays is evident.

Carcone - had a couple of good forechecking shifts but can't break free of traffic to make a play.

Bad

Molino -needs to be moved to a lower level. Looks like another waste of a contract. Never, ever has the puck and barely in the play

LaPlante - has been a little better this season but still not good enough

I say right now Boucher is the first call up at forward and Weiricoch the first for defense.

I concur. Just waiting to hear the call as the replacements for Edler and Eriksson must be coming.

How dumb can this management team be not to have acquired those centers in the off season? Benning and Linden have both stated they needed to take care of that issue for 2 seasons and have not done so. The AHL is loaded with UFA players who are not vets at the beginning of every summer as they let their Valk types walk. Speaking of Valk even he would have been a better fit than Darcy and Woods. He's a simple example. I listed a couple others back in July/August. The exact date not in my current mindset.

Everyone kept telling us how our center issue would be solved with Megna and Chaput. There is a reason 2 Comets coaches have been reluctant to play Megna in the middle.

Chaput has been a disappointment thus far although he has not been handed gifted wingers. Last night it was crash/bang, few puck skills LaBate and run around like a headless chicken with the inability to do anything in traffic Carcone ( I haven't been able to watch the games to see if he has been falling down every shift, but he did in the exhibition games.) . However in game 1 he had Boucher with LaBate, game 2 Megna with LaBate, and game 3 Rodin with Labate. Haven't figured out Cull's fascination with LaBate as a top 6 forward. he is not. He is crasher on the 3rd line with stand in front of the net PP ability. He has been an offensive passenger most nights anywhere above the bottom 6 since he arrived. he just isn't skilled enough to make a go with the better skilled guys.

Megna as you say has been unimpressive, and Rodin has only been on the game day roster once. Rodin missing the first 2 is understandable due to his arrival time on the weekend of the first 2 games. However, he was invisible in Friday's game in Rochester and back in the seats last night. He'll get a week of practice before the next game, but I have to wonder if he isn't being given a slow insertion into game action as they bring him along from his rehab. Kind of like rehab on the go. Play a game, see how it goes, sit one out, practice, rinse and repeat until he is the old Rodin again or proves not to be. We should know about Christmas. Shinkaruk and Cassels didn't get back to game shape/injury free for about that time span, but they didn't get rested between games. This vet rule may actually benefit his rehab.

As to Megna at center, He was at center in game 1. He was a wing for Chaput in game 2, sat out game 3, and last night started out on Darcy's wing with Archibald on the other. last night he and the other 5 on the bottom switched all over the place with the PPs and PKs mixing everything up.

It appears Cull is trying to distribute scoring throughout his top 3 lines, but his line mixing along with the rotating vets has created zero chemistry and won't until he gets some kind of fixed pattern. He is fishing right now and that's understandable.

Moynihan and injured MacEwen have yet to see any action, but fringers Laplante, Molino, and D'Aoust are getting lots of ice due to this vet glut. Would like to see if Mac might be of any kind of help in the middle. We already know Cassels is not a play maker, but he will slot directly into the middle on the bottom 6 upon his return.

Can only hope they decide to put Gaunce down here. He would be a huge addition in the middle replacing Bancks between Goldobin and Boucher. Probably 2-4 weeks before we know anything regarding his deployment. Assume the conditioning stint will be automatic.

Cull when asked about Demko said that all GOOD coaches in the game have a good goalie. Demko has been the answer for the Comets right now. Bachman would have the pundits questioning the true strength of this hockey team beyond Goldobin and Boucher right now.

The Comets have a total of 10 players on the score sheet after 4 games and 5 of those have a single point each. 3 players, Goldobin/Bancks/Boucher have 15 of the total 26 points.

Demko is 2-1 with a 1.34 GAA and .953 SV%.

The team is being carried by 3 guys right now and Bancks is leeching off the success of 2 of them.

Holm had a 3 point night with a goal and 2 assists.

The Comets have scored a total of 8 goals and 5 are on the PP. It speaks to the lack of chemistry at 5 on 5.
