Not sure how true this is, but I really like what I've seen out of Boqvist, seems to have a real knack for getting the puck on net, even when it doesn't look like he has a good lane to shoot he just gets a sneaky wrister through on net. Most people key in on whomever has the hardest shot being the best PP d-man, but just being able to consistently get that puck past the first defender on the PP and on net, is so important, a sneaky wrister that finds its way through a maze of bodies is every bit as dangerous as an unscreened 102 MPH cannon.

Agree, but I also have to point out he has a cannon of a shot too! Harder than Bouchards to my eye.

People need to realize that Quinn Hughes has a legitimate shot at playing the game like this guy. I have no doubt in my mind he could go down as one of the most prolific dmen ever if everything goes right for him. He looks a lot like Coffey in the NCAA this year. He's a very underrated talent at this point, and I think its mostly because of his size.

If he was as good as you say/think he would be going #1 not possibly dropping to 7

If Hughes was 6'1", had a good shot and was better defensively, then..yeah

Same arguments against Hughes were used against Coffey. He's to small, he's not good defensively... Coffey's shot was better, but people are really overreacting to Hughes slap shot, it's no worse then Nurse's, and his wrister is quite good. Michigan is in the NCAA National tournament so Hughes will have a bit of time left to show what he's got.

Also Boqvist is worse then Hughes defensively, and will most likely take longer to get to the NHL.

Not saying he is going to be bad. If Boqvist, Bouchard and Dahlin are all off the board Hughes would probably be my choice.

Hughes is really good offensively, but that's his one dimension. Also don't think he is the best fit for the team due to his style of offense.

Shayne Gostisbehere was heavily compared to Coffey
And?

If Hughes was such a sure thing he would be going #1.

Either way I don't think we have a chance at any of the good d. I think we end up drafting 8 and 1-7 go
Dahlin, Svechnikov, Zadina, Boqvist, Tkachuk, Bouchard, Hughes.

So we are looking at the next tier of prospects anyways.

So either Wahlstrom, Dobson or Farabee. All guys who I think are quite a while away and have a much lower ceiling than the others. If we come out of this year not drafting top 7, the season was a complete waste.

Hell I think the team could fall as far back as 12 because the team is slowly creeping up the standings which is the dumbest thing this organization has done this year. No point in really arguing Bouchard or Hughes cause I don't think they fall to where we finish. Only chance we have to make it is if we win one of the lotteries, but even said, the top 3 is pretty set.

That Smith guy would be a hell of a consolation prize... It's a deep draft, we're going to come out with a very good prospect one way or another.

You misread that I think. I don't think Hughes is a sure thing. Ghost went in the 3rd round

I could see Detroit taking Hughes.

It's not really a deep draft. The top 7 is great. 8-12 is decent and then it's pretty shallow after that.

If we don't end up top 7 we are getting a guy who will need 2 years or junior and then probably another 2 years of AHL time before he sees the show. If that's the case we might as well trade it.

Per 68 games played stat lines for every defenceman that was drafted top 15 out of the CHL since 2006 in both their 17 year old year and 18 year old year.

I think this puts the production of Smith, Bouchard and Dobson into perspective. From 2006 to 2017 there were three 70 point years by 17 year olds that were taken with top 15 picks. Barring a massive fall, Smith and Dobson should make that 5. For Bouchard's 18 year old season he bests Ellis despite the 2009-10 Spitfires scoring 90 more goals and only falls behind Dougie Hamilton's 2011-12 season.

IMO, If we pick...

1: Dahlin

2 - 5: Boqvist (If 2/3 trade down)

6 - 10: Bouchard or Dobson

Its unlikely that we'll pick 1st, and almost impossible to pick in the 3 - 6 range, which kind of sucks, because Dahlin and Boqvist are two incredible PMD that play the right side (Dahlin is a lefty, can play either side).

That said, the 6-10 range offers some great consolation prizes in Evan Bouchard and Noah Dobson, two more offensive RHD. I'm still torn on which I'd rather have on the Oilers. There is a poll at http://hfboards.mandatory.com/threads/noah-dobson-vs-evan-bouchard.2440609/ that is currently tied at 25.

Dobson is likely the safer pick. I see him as a guy like Alex Pietrangelo (Dobson's actually putting up slightly better numbers). He's a big guy and a very strong skater, with a rock solid defensive game. He could be seeing NHL time as soon as next year. He has a great shot and would vastly improve our PP. He has a higher floor than Bouchard and is more likely to reach his ceiling.

Bouchard is the riskier pick, but has more offensive upside. He is right up their with Dahlin and Boqvist in the offensive zone, possesses a great shot, and is putting up some incredible numbers in the OHL on a terrible team, playing almost 29 min per game. It is pretty hard to find an NHL comparison for him, but I'd say John Carlson or Brent Burns.

The worry for me is that Bouchard is a better version of Ryan Mantha. A guy the Rangers liked enough to draft, but thought he wasn't going to make it in the bigs, and now he's with Bakersfield after a huge final junior season last year.

The worry for me with Dobson is that he's a RHD version of Nurse - great skater, great defender, solid top 4 guy potential, but no gamebreaker on offence. Granted, he's having a productive season, but the Q factor is a worry as well.

If you can't grab Boqvist, then pick the guy with the best NHL offensive upside.

I mean....Bouchard and Mantha are not comparable in almost anyway.
Manthas draft+1 was 25 points in 52 games. Bouchard just had 87 in 67. There game is nothing similar at all, except for that they are both bigger and right shots.
