Tom Reid, D
St._20Paul-20111120-00035.jpg

Defensive defenseman extraordinaire who killed 50% of his teams' penalties in his 701 game career. Finished 10th in all-star team voting in 1972 with only 21 points. His career was cut short by a mysterious skin rash called the "gunk" that caused him pain every season. Later it was realized that Reid was allergic to the dye used in jerseys, and a number of athletes in other sports were similarly afflicted.
The Leader-Post - Dec 11 said:
"Reid is that rare bird, a young fellow who emphasizes defence and works at it," says North Stars' coach xxx. "Nowadays a defenceman doesn't get much chance to hit, but Reid has fine anticipation and gets in his share of shots."

Reid agrees he enjoys scoring goals just like any other player. "But to me the ultimate in satisfaction is preventing a breakaway, overhauling a rival and taking the puck off him before he can draw a bead on our goalkeeper."
Bio from last year

George Allen LW/D

Rugged winger also dropped back to defense on occasion.

82 goals 115 assists 197 points in 339 GP
Thompson paired Rookies xxx and George Allen with Centre Cully Dahlstrom, which gave him a rugged combination and one which thrives on heavy going.

The Windsor Daily Star said:
The Chicago defense strengthened by the return of xxx from the United States coast guard service, will be drawn from xxx, George Allen, Eddie Wares, Joe Cooper, and Reg Hamilton.

Saskatoon Star-Phoenix said:
As in most of their recent games, it was Canadiens' fast-stepping trio of Billy Reay, xxx, and George Allen that carried the mail for the Montrealers. Allen and Reay collected the Canuck markers.
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=Cr1jAAAAIBAJ&sjid=RHoNAAAAIBAJ&pg=1376,2286982&dq=george+allen+hockey&hl=en
The Montreal Gazette said:
...and Left-wingers Doug Bentley, xxx, and George Allen. Those men played the kind of fast, aggressive hockey that made Chicago one of the league's "gold mines" last year, when 288,315 customers gave Chicago second place...
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=CIAuAAAAIBAJ&sjid=3ZgFAAAAIBAJ&pg=5314,4763238&dq=george+allen+hockey&hl=en

And I'll finish off with a playmaking winger for a top six spare, J.P. Dumont, RW
JP_Dumont_225x300.jpg

He has the most adjusted ES points of any post-expansion player left, and I believe he has the 10th most adjusted PP points as well.

He has vsX scores of 68, 61, 59, 58, 53, 49, 41 for a six year sum of 348 which is better than both of my top six RWs and very good for this draft.

The Muskies select LW/C Dave Hannan

hannanNI_zps2bcf4843.jpg

5'11, 170 lbs
Shoots L

1988, 1996 Stanley Cup Champion

114 G, 191 A, 305 Pts in 841 NHL GP

Joe Pelletier:
Dave Hannan was an average player in many respects. Yet he was one of the most valuable and unheralded players on every team he ever played on.

"Hanner" was an average skater and puckhandler. He liked to play a physical game but because of his size limitations, he wasn't the most effective hitter out there. Yet he played bigger than he actually was. Hannan was a good faceoff man and penalty killer, with a knack for defensive anticipation.

D Marc-Edouard Vlasic

6'1, 205 lbs
Shoots Left

29 G, 125 A, 154 Pts in 558 NHL GP

Hockey News:
Rarely makes mistakes in the defensive zone. Displays a mature game with the right attitude and is capable of playing in any game situation. Is plenty mobile. Quality puck-moving, big-minute defenseman.

and D Yuri Shatalov

5'8, 178 lbs
Shoots Right

1974 World Championship Gold Medal

Chidlovski
Yuri Shatalov was a steady Russian elite league blueliner of the 1970s. Style wise, he was rather a reliable solid player in his own zone than a spectacular offensive defenseman. He wasn't a slick skater or a speedy zone-to-zone runnner. Shatalov's specialty was mostly physical play and shot-blocking during the opponents' attacks. He was quiet often assigned to neutralize specific players of the opponents' team.

Joe Pelletier:
Yuri Shatalov was a defensive defenseman who is one of the few Soviet players during the "robotic" era who could have his style of play described as "full of heart." He was often used against the other team's top players because of his defensive play and his first-step quickness.

Shatalov was captain of the Soviet club team Krylja Sovetov, but never became a regular on the national team.

Perhaps he never became a regular on the national team following an unusual event in Soviet hockey that occurred in 1973. Shatalov attacked an opponent on the ice. It was a routine thing in Canadian hockey, but very much frowned upon in Soviet hockey.

Wow, so many players today I am glad to see selected! Here’s a top-10, in order:

Dineen
Reid
Dumont
Witt
Vlasic
Moreau
Brannen
Allen
Hill

I’ll select a guy who was 3rd, 4th and 5th in goalie all-star voting and statistically similar to Ed Giacomin diring their time together in New York: Gilles Villemure, G

I’ll also take Coddy Winters, D/F, who was a superstar against lesser competition in the USA from 1908 to 1925. He was a superb all-around player at his level, and

Lastly, I’ll select Parker MacDonald, LW/C, who has the best percentage scores left for any pre-expansion forward. Basically a stat-based pick who I think was more or less one-dimensional, I only expect him to provide some offense when needed due to injury.

Six teams have completed roster posts. Four more need to be completed asap.

Hobnobs still has two picks to make up (including a coach), jkrx needs to assemble lines, Rob Scuderi needs to put his last few picks on his post and indicate captaincy, ted1971 needs to indicate captaincy.

Regular season ranking votes are to be sent to Sturminator on Monday.

Potential Problem:

ResilientBeast picked Valeri Bure in today's single-A draft about 12:28 p.m.

HobNobs also picked him in today's double-AA draft about 5:24 p.m.

Who lays claim to him?

Should be HobNobs. ResilientBeast did pick him first but he picked him in a later draft than HobNobs.

The problem is most easily solved by having one of them volunteer to re-pick. They both have some claim, and it's my fault for not delaying the Single-A draft until after the late picks were all made in the Double-A draft.

If that's the case, then where does one draw the line? Someone who is not done their team could poach any of our A draft picks right now. In theory anyone could do it with an add/drop. If we're silly enough to have two drafts going at once, then first guy to take him gets him. Valeri Bure belongs to beast.

No one has add/dropped nor asked about it. So, it's easy to make a rule before that happens: If anyone really wants to make an add/drop before Monday's regular season voting then do so by Sunday night at midnight, and none of the Single-A draft picks made before that add/drop are eligible. That solves that.

1. The Double-A draft was officially finished but Hobnobs had two picks he had missed.
2. ResilientBeast made his Single-A pick BEFORE Hobnobs made his late Double-A pick.
3. It's a bigger loss to lose a first liner in the Single-A than a last extra forward in the Double-A.

so,...

ResilientBeast will receive Valeri Bure. My apologies to Hobnobs for not delaying the Single-A draft until after he made the late, missed picks.

I agree it's completely on hobnobs for not completing his team on time. But let's be honest, this happens in every mld, AAA, and AA. At this point we should expect it. It's not usually a problem, though, because we haven't ever gone and started another draft by the time the stragglers finish up.

Doesn't Hobs live in Sweden? About a 5 or 6 hr time difference, making it a little tougher for him to pick?

I live in South Korea and stay up until MIDNIGHT local time (10am eastern 14 hours earlier eastern). I also emphasize on the boards and in PMs to PM a shortlist if one cannot pick.

I had twice apologized for my role in this. No more. Let's move on...
