I assume Kahkonen wasn't interested in sticking around. Probably not a ton of goalies lining up to play for the Sharks next year, so Vanecek can keep the crease warm while they continue the rebuild.

NJ sticking with their plan (much like LA) of grabbing whatever backup goalie is available off the scrap pile. And much like LA, the best one (Blackwood/Quick) was the one they let go

I don't think it's the worst thing ever for San Jose.

Vitek could rebound some value next year and we see what Jake Allen got in a trade this year. Saves them from having to sign a goalie in the off season.

They probably couldn't get any real action on Kahkonen, so they are basically trying it again next year with Vitek. It's fine.
