I wonder if today in the players-only meeting someone stood up and said, "Okay guys, going forward we're gonna show up at the arena every game ready to give 100%, no excuses, just like Shep here..."

An hour later, "Hi, Shep? This is DW. Guess what? Pack yer bags, yer headed for the Big Apple!"

is he a guy you can put out on the PK? block shots?

I know the Rangers desperately need a guy who can win face-offs but it seems that everyone here thinks his game is better on the boards?

He has 36 blocked shots in 56 games (I believe that is the games played).

And he averages 0.03 of ice time per game on the penalty kill. So the good news is he is probably perfect on his penalty kills on the year.

He doesn't do any of those things. He can grind out shifts and will play physical but isn't a specialist,

LOL!! "I'm off to join Boyler in the playoffs. Hope you boys get some good tee times while we're there..."

See, the (ex)Sharks are going to make the playoffs!!

Say what you will about his game, he give 100%, 100% of the time while here!

James Sheppard did not. He's been dogging it for a while.

Shep is more than he showed or was able to show in SJ but he is not good on faceoffs, nor did he pk.

Agreed. Shep wasn't (and shouldn't be) coming back next season so they let him go early and effectively pay him less than they would have for the last ~20 games of the season to get a 4th round pick. I'd make this move over letting him walk in FA every day of the week.

This is not allowed. A rational, well thought out post without emotion or drama.

Ban this guy.

Especially since Sheppard is one of the stronger players on the boards too. I don't get the rationale.

If we believe that DW lets Mclellan set the line ups each night then he is the one refusing to play Shep at his stronger position...maybe DW finally figured this was the only way he was going to see Hertl at C. Take away Tod's favorite third line center.

This trade is so bad. Sheppard is the player who enabled this team to have a reasonable depth beyond the first 2 lines. This only makes sense if it's an attempt to clear cap space.

Meh. Shep was good on the boards but 9/10 times it would never develop into a play. He's not a bad player but he's nothing to get worked up about.

don't forget the Shep is a UFA after this season which means he can sign anywhere without compensation to the Sharks. Get something now for him or get nothing later.

He also had a bad habit of mailing it in and since he was a pending free agent, I doubt they felt the need to keep him around.

They don't need him, but replacements don't come cheaper than what Sheppard would have demanded next year.

Anyway, maybe they wanted to get rid of him because of locker room reasons. If they felt that he was a bad influence on the team spirit, then I think it was the right call. He's not that important. But if that isn't the case, then it was a bad trade.

In my opinion Sheppard did not give a full effort all the time and since that has been one of the biggest complaints coming from the coach about players not showing up this should surprise no one.

I don't know. I think he's more consistent than guys like Nieto and Hertl. Granted those are young players, but if you put the big 4 forwards aside, I can't see how Sheppard has consistency issues.

The issue with Sheppard is that everybody is asking way too much from him.
He's been thrown around on the bottom 2 lines on the wing and center, playing with a lot of different players for as long as he's been in SJ. How is he supposed to find his game when you don't give him a chance? This team relies on the top 2 lines for offense, but sometimes you can see one of the bottom 2 lines stepping up. Sheppard is pretty much always part of that line.

The only part about this trade that I like is that it's probably the best for Sheppard himself. I wish him well in the Rangers, and I hope that they will give him more stability.

Rangers fan here can he fight a bit? Does he stick up for teammates? Will he add some grit because we need some on the 4th line...

He's scrappy but not much of a fighter. He did drop the gloves once or twice this season though. He's always one of the first guys to get involved in a scrum but I don't think I'd call him gritty.
