People start these threads so early now it's almost impossible to get a Preds player unless your Johnny on the spot.

Nope. You can take an opposing player every game if you want to.

I’m trying to understand why people pick the players they do and what for. I want to be a part of this, and if it’s too late then playoffs for sure. I guess I just would like a little clarity. I read the “refresher” rules but still not sure if I follow. Do you pick a player you think will be first star or something?

No you pick someone you think will score or in the case of the goalie, win the game.
