And usage. Monahan was very obviously playing hurt. Probably would have been wise to rest him up early in the season, especially considering they had a perfectly capable young center coming off an excellent playoffs (as a center) rotting away as a bottom 6 winger.
The motivations behind his early-season trade request are even more obvious now

This is off topic of the armchair gm thing but has Monahan answered questions about being on the fourth line? Has anyone asked him point blank how he feels about the demotion/his play etc etc? I know its Calgary and the media tends to be tap dance around things a little bit but if anyone could let me know how it went/send me a link I'm interested in knowing. Thx

Found this, briefly touches on it, but I don't think anyone has come straight out and asked him about his reduced role.

Thanks - pretty wild that he hasnt had to address it. On one hand its like okay the local media aren't scum bags like they are in Toronto but at the same time, they have a job to do. Even Francis hasnt touched it.

There is really not much else to talk about Monahan that’s not already known

Do you think boring Sean Monahan is going to say anything controversial?

Now I'm going to just put my own personal thoughts on this one here:

This could just be a way of pushing him and letting him know this is on thin ice, in which case message should be loud and clear. Also, I think Lucic has been just as bad, if not worse, than Sean Monahan and shouldn't be a regular either. If he's actually out on Friday though... well? I mean I've heard the "locker room chemistry" issue come up before regarding why we shouldn't trade him, well how is it going to be when you have a 6.3m dollar healthy scratch who certainly isn't going to be happy with that role?

I definitely think this is reaffirming that his future isn't in Calgary though. Sutter has gradually reduced his role from middle 6 centre with pp1 time, to bottom 6 centre with with pp2 time, then 4th line centre, and now this.

I do find it interesting that of the three of them on that line, the one who has by far been the worst is the one who remains in the lineup.

I think Lewis has been a little worse, but otherwise I agree. I think egos are playing a bit of a role here for sure, because he certainly doesn't deserve a locked in top 12 role. Could also be that he's 6'3 and physical so f*** it.

I think it's more thread worthy that Lewis seems to be sitting as well.

This was inevitable. Monahan is not the player that Sutter is insisting on him becoming.

Cap hit smap bit. The thing with Sutter is that he wants his players, especially his bottom sixer's, to fill a role, any role, if they're not scoring. Lucic provides some truculence and the occasional fight which is why he stays in even though he's awful otherwise. Lewis brings forechecking and penalty killing which is why he's stayed in for so long. But Jarnkork makes him a little redundant. Ritchie has photos of Darryl cheating on his farm with another farm.

Monahan though is bringing nothing to the table right now. No offense, can't elevate his linemates, not a defensive specialist, not even a pp specialist, doesn't fight, doesn't bring energy or grit, just nothing. He's not even a good replacement level player because Ruzicka is more effective.

Now I'll believe the healthy scratch when I see it but it should have been done a long time ago. Like several coaches ago.

Problem is, there's no room for the 'player' Monahan is anymore.
Sure, we could staple him onto Johnny again; and watch Johnny's production and the usefulness of that lineup crumble to the same level it was last year or the year before.

I'd be interested to see if this isn't something that's longer term with Monahan cycling in for Lucic depending on the matchup.

Funny enough, Dube got the same treatment at practice a week ago. He's doing okay now. Albeit with much better linemates.

Practice lines =//= game lines.

I find it interesting that when you say "the one who has been by far the worst" is not as straightforward to determine.

I've never hated Mony. And he got a big contract out of his career. But he's been miscast as to what he was. If his salary was half or 3/8 of what it is centering a 3rd or 4th line . . . What management should have done is identified that and sold him as all the fine points. Good shot, size, lots of goals and points, plays the PP etc. Now the gig is up, unfortunately.

That guy can do one thing better than anyone else on the team so he gets to play.

I feel bad for Sean. He's been such a professional throughout this whole process and has been willing to fill any role. Unfortunately he's just not that good.

He'll likely get bought out in the summer and get a fresh short term deal somewhere else.

I am feeling pretty good about that bet I made with @Ledge And Dairy last year though....
I bet in 3 years time that he's struggling hold down a regular spot in this league.
Ill gladly take that bet baring a career ending injury like Hossa or something. I would say Monahan has at least 10 years left and at least 5 of them as a top 6 caliber center

Ditto on all your thoughts.

And you nailed the projection.
