This kid will be good.

But maybe we should wait and see what happens when he faces some real goaltending :P

Well, he's been scoring in the preseason already... So KHL has no real goaltending? The all-time record for u19 players is 17 goals by Kuznetsov, Tolvanen also the youngest hat trick scorer in history... It's not like this is commonplace

Well, nothing special if the shots keep being that good. There was no flukes from goalie, just sniping rockets to top corner plus the goalie was borderline NHL goalie with NHL experience. Better goalie than some goalies what Laine faced in Liiga.

But its just one game and the pre season games. Lets not get carried away yet!

3rd goal Enroth doesn't even move by the time the puck's past him. First goal he's not even close to being able to save, makes 95% of the movement after the puck's past him.

The second goal might not go in against a stronger goalie but even so... Tolvanen is only 18. He's expected to strengthen his shot, too.

Yea well 1st and 3rd he just doesn't left too much chance for goalie, he gets it so accurately there isn't much to do for goalie with positioning and if the shot is also that hard then not with reactions. It's not Laine laser, but something like that.

In the 2nd goal, the goalie looks like he is not expecting that hard shot from there, backskating and all. There he gets caught "off guard" a bit perhaps. But when you beat tender clean you beat him. Somehow, it's always the same guys that make goalies look bad.

About the academic failure in making it to Boston College/NCAA,

According to a Finnish article from yesterday, he tried going through the American high school in two years and it was hinging from a couple of courses in the end. He couldn't get them done in the summer either because of the Combine/Draft.

NCAA route would have taken one more high school year, which would have slowed the hockey career.

And now he's getting money and not education. So typical for modern youngsters...

Money's worth far more. 4 years as a pro at a high level even before NHL would be maybe 200k euros a year. I personally use around 15k euros a year so that'd last for 13 years. 4 years and you got yourself covered for 50 years and more. Invest and it'll last until you die.

How many years of "real" work would you need to do to make up for the lost 800k? Even with a relatively good job, it'd take like 10-15 years of working... when you could just not work instead.

Timmy Liljegren has nothing on him for 2018-19 Calder. :sarcasm:

The guy has been a beast with Jokerit! The Preds will soon be making a jersey for him.

Time for a re-draft thread in the main board

I think almost everyone except for NHL GM's knew this guy should've gone 15~.

He's there all year, finds out he can't get into college, and then all of a sudden barely makes it into the 1st round. He must've kicked someone's dog.

Can't get into college -> "off ice issues" -> every GM panics.

He didn't end the year strong when matched up against Samberg in the USHL playoffs (which helped Samberg's stock). He got 5 points in his last 9 playoff games. He slipped further than he should have though. Teams also still haven't bought fully in on the USHL kids who aren't in the USNTDP, Kyle Connor and Boeser also went lower than they should have in retrospect.

When your sub 6 foot, not a high-end skater and play on the wing, a bunch of scouts will be looking for reasons to drop you. He also may have been a victim of overscouting, where people stopped focusing on what he could do that's great (his shot) and started picking apart his flaws.

Don't think the college stuff mattered. Although, teams will always get skeptical when they hear the words going to the KHL. He is one of the few Euro-based first round picks who hasn't signed his ELC yet. Andersson, Brannstrom, Liljegren, Necas, Heiskanen, and Chytil have all signed. Pettersson, Vaakanian, and Vesalainen haven't signed yet, but Tolvanen is the only one who plays where there isn't a transfer agreement.

He was on my list of happy to draft for the Leafs.

He does the hardest thing there is to do, score goals. He'll have a career in the NHL because of it.

If Brandon Pirri can have a career in the NHL doing it, im sure Tolvanen can too
