Wideman is one of the few Flames who actually puts the puck on net and tries to score goals.

wideman's most redeeming quality is that he can get shots through to the net, he cant do that to save his life this year, until hes doing that again hes a liability

I think we should trade Gio. I mean, I like him at 4 million, but at 6.75 I'd rather he be completely off the team. He's old, one dimensional and completely overrated.

Someone here clearly hasn't watched the Avs, Canucks, Rangers and more relevently, the Senators' defense play this season.

There are a lot of bad defensemen in this league. Wideman's not even the worst defenseman on this team.

Not sure if serious. But I am really worried about the back 4 years of Gios deal. He's had two great years coming into this one, but I remember a couple years before that he had a really poor one imo. I don't think him at 6.75 at 34+ will be doing us any favors

I would trade Wideman for the highest pick he could fetch. We need the cap space.

Until he's in the last year of his contract, you'd have to add some value to move his contract, or take a bad contract in return.

Every team wants cap space. And those that have it are intentionally below the max.

It'll be tough moving a 5 million dollar bottom pairing PP specialist. I don't think his value could have been higher than last year; he was logging big minutes, he was okay defensively and was being played as a top 4 Dman.

I know I mentioned it a few times over the summer, saying that he was a changeable part and we could make up his offence; and was met with "56 points! and 15 goals! Yeah, expendable, movable /sarcasm". I don't think you could easily move him in today's NHL. The only reason Yandle was moved and for a major return is because he's a really good player

I wanted to move Wideman last season because I thought someone would over pay him and his 56 points..

I'd read in a couple of places that the Flames had attempted to move Wideman at various points over the past couple of years (not sure for what intended return) and just didn't have any takers. His contract is pretty beefy, given that he's not really effective beyond a #4 role.

Yeah, there's been rumors of the Flames trying to move Wideman for quite some time now; pretty much ever since Burke/Treliving came on board. Maybe an off chance he's traded this summer, but more likely any deal will have to wait until the 2017 trade deadline, assuming Wideman will waive his NMC/NTC.

Really hard to make any kind of trade in today's NHL. Just about impossible to dump bad contracts.

IMO, Wideman's contract would have been excellent at 4 million. He's a little over a mil over paid. Not terrible, but enough to make other teams pause IMO.

But based on some of the comments, you could almost believe we had Nikitin or MacDonald playing as our #4.

Minor question... if we were in desperate need of cap space, do you think we could actually dump Wideman, Smid or Engelland non salary retained to a team? (ie: 7th rounders etc. but not have to give up assets to dump them such as 1st and crap contracts)

Also, any idea if we would be able to just let some of these guys be taken by an expansion team in time for the Gaudreau and Monahan contracts? (I'm thinking no unless they are given bridge deals)

I think the Flames would have to be very lucky to find someone who wanted Smid/Engelland at those cap hits. There's always a possibility that Wideman might be moveable without salary retention, though. His offensive abilities definitely have value.

I could see a team taking him in the off-season. 5.75 is a lot. But IMO overpaying a guy for one year is a lot less risky then signing a better player to a five or six year deal in FA. Could be a low risk #4 for another team.
