Apparently Toronto wants 5th overall (CAR) something around their 24th overall pick + Roster player (Kessel?) for 5th overall and capdump(Semin?).

An astute move by Toronto, an incredibly stupid move by Carolina.

Back to Semin for a minute. I wonder how badly Carolina wants to get rid of his contract. They have a bit of cap space, but not a lot. Something like:

Semin & 5th overall for 15th overall

Or, if the 5th overall is a non starter -

Semin & 35th overall for Raymond

I recently read an article that of all the bad contracts in the league right now, Semin has the best chance of rebounding.

IMO, they(CAR) needs the 5th overall more and can gamble on Semin rebounding. But I guess it depends on ownership. Toronto on the otherhand want's another top 5 pick and is pulling every stop. Like I said before it would look good on Toronto, not so much for Carolina (But I don't like Phil Kessel.)

That's an overpayment which is exactly what they should be asking. But I think, this move would be done due to ownership.
Kessel might thrive in Carolina, somebody should ask him if he likes BBQ.

It's their defense they had 2 good d-man know they have 1. They need a complete middle pair of defensemen. They also lack depth on Wings, they do have a great group of Centers though.

I don't even think we have to add a 2nd, Semin's contract is that bad. I think 15th OA + Raymond is enough. I'd 50% Raymond and add our 3rd if we really had to sweeten to get the deal done. It's a much better proposal than Carolina getting Kessel.

Man, if we got 5th OA, I would be jumping for joy.

Who would you guys pick at 5th OA? I was thinking Provorov.

Just getting into the top 7 and having a shot at one of those guys would rock. of course, a guy like Strome, maybe Crouse or Zacha is going to go 3rd to 5th, so even getting into the the top 10 might be well worth it, though riskier. We could easily move down to 18 minimum though and still get a fantastic guy.

According to the Fourth Period, Kessel has a NTC up to 8 teams he will accept a trade to.

Carolina runs away with that. Change our 15th OA to 45th OA imo. Either that, or give up one of our 3rds for 35th OA.

I agree, doesn't seem like it'll happen. But it's fun to speculate. Eating that much cap for a top5 pick seems worth it IMO. I think Carolina's Ownership is desperate to shed cap. That's why they even speculate such a deal.
