Seems to be a theme with these titles. Or is there?

Back to the fantasies of us acquiring MacKinnon/Duchene/whoever. :)

GM's and as well fans. Half of our fanbase was ready to give our entire team to San Jose in exchange for Hertl. He had an absurd shooting % for a few months. Since then he has come down to earth and is showing what he really is, a middle 6 forward.

1 fan was ready to give the entire team for Hertl. The same fan who thinks Nieves is a first line center and that Marc Staal should move to left wing.

Just because the homeless man under the bridge is shouting that the aliens are coming doesn't mean we should all hide in our basements.

Maybe there was one who was ready to give the entire team but there were a more than a few people who wanted to give up significant assets for a "future consistent 40 goal scorer". That still makes me laugh every time I think of it.

Just goes to show what a high shooting % can do to peoples perceptions of a player.

It's more annoying what a low shooting % can do to people's perceptions of a player (see: Stepan, Derek).

Stepan has 55 points with a 8.1 S% and he sucks
Miller has 56 points with a 16.7 S% and he is great, apparently.

If Stepan shot at his career shooting percentage last season, instead of a career low, he'd have scored roughly 22 goals, and hit 60 points. Wonder what the narrative around him this summer would've been had that happened...

Then again, if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. No use arguing IFs. Stepan shot a career low. People got upset. He gets traded.

It's happened to Reilly Smith twice since 2013.

Athletes are autonomous figures who can have all sorts of priorities and preferences for where they want to play. That being said, despite no rumored link between Kerfoot and the Rangers, it seems like a logical fit. The Rangers need centers. Not just at the NHL level, but at all levels of the organization. Barring an insane training camp from seventh-overall pick Lias Andersson, Kerfoot’s only real competition for an NHL spot would be Boo Nieves, who was a mid-range prospect to begin with and is coming of a frustrating, injury-filled season. One would also think Jimmy Vesey, who won his Hobey Baker Award in 2016 with Kerfoot on his line feeding him pucks, would be able to do his fair share of lobbying.

We talked about Kerfoot quite a bit earlier in the Roster Building thread. Numbers would fit. He has a former teammate here. Nothing linked him here though.

Others on the site mentioned Kerfoot's heart was in Vancouver. I think one of his family members has ties to the Nucks.

I thought Jagr looked amazing in 2016 but he didn't have as much stamina in 2017. Still the guy can probably roll out of bed at 50 and outscore some of our guys.

I'd be absolutely shocked if Kerfoot didn't sign with the Canucks

His dad owns(?) a junior hockey team in Vancouver

But I don't see anyway he would sign with us. He has a much better shot at playing with the Devils and he doesn't want to sign with them

At that point you have to make the argument that multiple instances of low shooting percentage are indicative of a player in decline/lacking in skill.

Whil this is true, i think its absolutely worth mentioning that Stepan played 165 more minutes than Miller did (little over 2 more minutes per game) with an 86 minute differential on the power play...theres an 11 minute power play point differential there..and while Stepan unquestionably produced at a better rate on the power play, he also played with better players on the power play..and we all know what quality of linemates does to a players production.

its also worth noting that Stepan was basically stapled to Chris Kreider and some combination of Zuccarello, Nash, or Vesey (which is a negative for most of the season)...while Miller was basically playing with Hayes and Grabner...while Hayes was a pretty big negative for most of the 2nd half of the season.

Miller had a good year that tailed off badly in the end. I think Stepan was more of a function of his linemates than his actual game. JT Miller played minutes on the 4th line and produced regularly..he also played minutes on the 3rd line and couldnt buy a point.

Stepan>Miller

Miller @ 2.75M > Stepan @ 6.5M

Shouldn't we also take into account that Stepan played against much better opposition than Miller?

People wanted stepan traded for a few reasons, and production wasnt really in the top of those reasons.

his game doesnt really fit a speed game the rangers are trying to play, his contract is enormous for his actual offensive production (forget his fancy stats..his actual points sit at about 50ish a year...thats a metric ton of money for a guy producing at 1/2 the rate of the elite players), his NTC kicks in soon, this is the best time to get maximum return for him (bet ya anything Arizona woulda been on his list). the rangers are trying to get younger and rebuild on the fly, they traded a 27 year old for a 21 year old and an 18 year old...both of which have tremendous upside and should be NHLers for a long time, if not in a Rangers uniform, then somewhere.

Thats a trade I probably make in retrospect...at the time I wasnt thrilled with the return, and woulda rather just kept stepan...but if you keep stepan, you dont get Shattenkirk. and, imho, Shattenkirk+DeAngelo+Andersson+Pavelec > Stepan + Raanta

I coulda sworn people have posted...literally all the time, in the arguments against Dan Girardi, that quality of linemates >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> quality of opposition.

If thats true for Girardi, which I believe that it is, then its also true for Stepan.

Kreider + Nash >>>>>> Hayes + Grabner

Stepan playing against Crosby, Stamkos, Kopitar, Bergeron, McDavid, Tavares, Barkov etc is a big difference from Miller playing against 3rd liners. Yes, he has better linemates, but they also play against better players.

And Stepan is a much better player overall than Miller. If you take cap-hit into account, that levels it a bit, but in my opinion not enough when you see what Stepan contributes defensively. Miller on the PK is not something I want to see. The whole "powerkill" hype I never understood.

Miller is a good player, but with his insanely high s% this year, which was close to Draisaitl, Crosby, Malkin, and even higher than Kucherov, people have to realize it is highly unlikely he can keep that up

At that point you have to make the argument that multiple instances of low shooting percentage are indicative of a player in decline/lacking in skill.

I don't really think shooting percentage is indicative of skill to begin with, so I'm not sure I agree that a declining shooting percentage means a decline in player skill.

Last year, among players who suited up in 41 or more games, the top-10 shooting% players are:

Oshie
Byron
Anisimov
Scheifele
Sissons
Rakell
Johansson
Connolly
Lee
Little

If you open it up to top-15, you begin to see the inclusion of some guys I'd consider elite shooters: (11-14).

Laine
Malkin
Crosby
Marchand
Dvorak

Ovechkin might be the best shooter the world has ever seen, yet his sh% last year ranked 191st in this sample.

I've done a lot of research on player shooting percentage because of JT Miller (if interested: http://nerdhockey.com/by-the-numbers/2017/2/4/true-shooting-percentage-how-many-shots-does-it-take trigger warning: stats and data tables). I think GMs and fans get caught up in it a lot without realizing how unstable it is. If you look at that list of those top-10 players above, I don't see the league's best shooters, I see guys who will very likely see a decrease in goals scored next season.
