Someone mentioned that they didn't see Rogie Vachon in his prime. If you get a chance, watch the 1976 Canada Cup tournament games. One of the best goaltending performances in a major hockey tournament. He only lost one game 1-0.

I`m currently trying to do the `79 season from an online newspaper archive ( the same method I`m using to find these voting results), and I`m about halfway through the season, but you can only look at so many blurry newspaper summaries before you have to put it down for awhile.

If anyone has a lead on where to find some of the missing results, specifically the early 70s, please let me know.

I don't know how old The Hockey News -issues you have, but it seems somebody is selling back issues even from 1940's. I haven't bought anything from there myself, but maybe somebody is interested in ordering the issues with awards details.

Apparently the Hockey Hall of Fame has a well-organized resource centre with thousands of newspapers, magazines and other similar material from all eras about the games` history; I`d assume most THNs would be there. It`s viewable by appointment only, but you`re allowed to look at or photocopy anything for a small fee. Unfortunately, I`m about 6 hours from Toronto, but I`d love to visit there.

Here`s some more Hart results from as far back as I could find. My primary focus here is the Hart, maybe I`ll look into the other awards later. Unfortunately the results are sometimes incomplete if not missing completely; but it`s better than nothing. An interesting side-note: from 1953-1968 the voting was done in two phases; they would vote at the halfway mark on the first half of the season, then vote before the playoffs on the second half of the season. Those two results would then be combined for the final result.

I just got a response from the statistics department of the NHL head office. They sent me a PDF copy of the 2004 NHL Awards Media Guide, and it is FANTASTIC!

It does not quite have everything I need or want but, it is a HUGE step in the right direction. It has the top 5 vote getters each year for the major awards. It only has the voting results for the first and second all stars - nothing beyond the top two.

I have sent another request for further information and I will keep you posted.

If anybody wants a copy of the 2004 NHL Awards Media Guide, PM me with your email address. It is a pretty cool document.

Thanks to Ogopogo for sending me that file. Lots of stuff to analyze and work with there. Unfortunately it looks like I did a lot of research for nothing. I can`t believe the NHL actually came through for once.

Adding this up it doesn't work out. It adds up to 586 points, when it should be 567. Rod Langway is listed as receiving 1-6-7 in the NHL Awards file, for 50 points, but that only adds up to 30 (5+18+7).

I double-checked the newspaper article. I forgot to mark down 1 point for Brad Park- my bad. It says Rod Langway (50); has to be a typo. It was Brian Sutter.

The 40 points is easy enough to find. The question is how to get the vote breakdown, just removing the 5 extra 1st place votes only accounts for 25 points. Removing 8 would make 40 points, but leave 3 1sts amongst these guys.

From the NHL Media Guide, the thing that stands out the most is the fact that Eddie Shore led all defensemen in Hart votes eight times (1928, 1929, 1931, 1933, 1935, 1936, 1938, 1939). This may be a bit of a stretch, but isn't it possible to infer that Shore was the best defenseman in the league eight times? Is this the equivalent of winning eight Norris trophies?

Hart voting went more on most valuable than best player back then, so it doesn't quite equate. Lionel Conacher was runner-up for the Hart in '34, but a 2nd team all-star. That said Shore was the top vote getter in all-star defensemen 8 times, 31, 32, 33, 35, 36, 38, 39 & 40, and the top defenseman in Hart voting in 28 & 29 before the all-star teams started.

Looking at Hart voting in the 50's Red Kelly 51 T3rd, 53 3rd, 54 2nd & 56 4th with 135 points, and Doug Harvey 55 5th, 56 5th, 57 5th, & 58 3rd with 87 points. Add in the fact that there were only half as many votes before 54, when the switched to first and second half voting, and it's obvious Kelly doesn't get enough respect as a great defenseman.

One eye-catcher for me was that Hainsworth wasn't in the top 5 in Hart voting when he had his 22 SOs in 29.

I found an error in the guide`s All-Star results; for the `82-`83 season it says :

1st team defence: Denis Potvin and Mark Howe
2nd team defence: Rod Langway and Ray Bourque

It should read:

1st team defence: Mark Howe and Rod Langway
2nd team defence: Ray Bourque and Paul Coffey
