Oh yes, that's right we're all lieing and there's absolutely never been any Americans bashing Canada, it's a figment of our imaginations.... Go on being oblivious but don't question why Americans are often called that if you choose to have that kind of attitude.

Go ahead, I'm quite fine for Americans to treat us as a major rival, it's a compliment of sorts for sure.
Well if you're only going by sports than no ****. How often do Americans outnumber Canadians at international hockey games.
I suppose convincing yourself it only goes one way is just a sad vain attempt to feel superior. Whatever works.

You're welcome Fly, I have a lot of U.S. friends and we have to stop ourselves sometimes when the convo gets too political, had this happen on FB just earlier today and it's very easy to get carried away in such posts.

The Czech Republic and Finland are not much bigger hockey nations than us. Percentage wise, sure. But here are the number of players in each country:
US: 500,579
Czech: 100, 668
Finland: 65,251

I'm beyond late but don't take the whole US when comparing to those countries. Just take the two biggest hockey States (Minnesota and Michigan). Not sure how that breaks down the argument but it would seem compareable.
I hate when our boys get booed in Canada. Truth be told, the only thing that makes Canada relevant is ifs proximity to us. They know that and it drives them to mindlessly boo teenagers they don't even know. Sad truth, sad country. Yeah I know, your good at hockey. No one off of this board gives a sh•t.

Kinda surprised this thread went down this direction. Being American born and raised and moving to Canada seven years ago. A few things that stick out. Well its a bit slanted since its Quebec so really not as representative as the rest of the country.
A. Canada is a great country and i would recommend it to anyone
B. Plenty of ignorance north of the border as there is south(no country has a lock on it)
C. I was met with a big inferiority complex when i first arrived. Its kind of annoying when people try to tell you how much better Canada is than the US and nag me to death about it. I would introduce myself and my accent gave my origin away and bam here we go bla bla bla.
D. I love hockey so therefore its awesome there is always a hockey game on.
E. Americans generally don't care about Canada or any other nation in the sense that Canada and others don't make the news really in the US, compared with the US makes the news daily in every nation because for some reason the world has chosen the US as the mecca for everything and thats my fault how.
Two great countries, that are very alike despite what my Canadian brethren think.

Weird thread is weird. I've been to Canada a few times so I'm no expert but from my experience it's pretty much like the US... except lame chain restaurants like Shoney's are called Golden Dish or something like that.
I think unless we live near the border Americans don't give the Canadians much thought, positive or negative. I think the majority of us assume Canadians are mostly like us, and therefore not really worth thinking about... kinda like how I would never think about Iowa... cuz you know what's the point?

I thought Americans think all Canadians are evil socialists who want to take away their guns and freedom.
You really don't even have a clue how much our two countries are intertwined and that's the problem. You think Canada is irrelevant to the States but in fact we are your largest trading partner **for one** and with the American economy being what it is right now, that's certainly nothing to sneeze at.
I could go on but really I think this is all fighting a losing battle because too many Americans are just determined to believe they are the universe all by themselves so so be it. Based on the reputation you've created around the world I'd say that mindset is not working too well for you but I give up trying to explain this to Americans anymore, thank God some have a clue. I'm done with the debate in this thread, I came on here to enjoy hockey talk, not to end up in endless debates with Americans.

Actually it is sad.
It happens every year. Even though the U.S. is not always the biggest threat in the tournament they always get the loudest boos. Even if they are not playing against Canada they get boos from the Canadian fans.
I understand there is more to Canadian culture than just hockey but if you ask anybody outside of North America to name something Canadian other than hockey i'm guessing you wont get a quick response from anybody.
Hockey is one of the few things that differentiates Canada from the U.S. culturally so maybe that is why Canadians are so defensive of hockey when it comes to the U.S.
I don't mind the booing at all.
I'm just pontificating on what would happen if there were as US-Russia game this year and how the crowd would react.
Whoever gets booed the loudest is Canada's biggest rival, right?

as long as there are people, there will probably be small number of them who are stupid a-holes, obviously including canadians. some people probably dislike and make fun of new zealand, too.
americans do not consider canada rivals in anything except a few sports like hockey, figure skating, ice dancing, skiing, speed skating, etc, and in production of things like timber, maple syrup, wheat, beans, etc.
americans have extremely positive views of canada and canadians. americans give canada the highest positive rating of any country on earth (possibly even higher than US).
