I'd like to speak to this bc I ref occasionally and I get players who complain about it.
My response to the guy whose stick is getting 'stuck': "What is your stick doing off the ice? They tell you in pee wee to keep it on the ice"
Unless the player doing the chicken wing absolutely grabs the stick, typically let this go. If it happens, I put both of them in the box.
I occasionally referee in the winter as well and I get it but not every one of those situations is created equal. If a guy is positioning his stick to try for the poke check, there is often an opportunity for the guy with the puck to "grab" it especially if he is turning. That said, you have to be "strong on your stick" and (especially at the NHL speed) that doesn't always lend itself well to keeping your stick on your ice. There are certainly times it is "close". What I'm against is the puck carrier intentionally chicken-winging the stick and creating a penalty based off that. We see that quite often.
How did Kapanen look in this game? Any signs of life?
He was honestly at 3/4 speed, as was Zucker, and he looked pretty good being the first pre-season game. Yes, there were signs of life.
Gudbranson got 4 x 4. Not sure he is hanging on barely lol
Outside of a couple poor value seasons in Vancouver, he's been a relatively solid, consistent dman. He got that "anchor" label and then could never shake it. But by most accounts, GMs aren't paying attention to it as the guy continues to get work. He's not a sexy PMD but I would suggest he would be adding an element here that we have been missing (which we tried to address bringing in Petry and Rutta).
