Actually it will cost more.

the teams that have space do not want 3+ yr cap hits on 30+ yr olds. that’s a big part of the reason Bjorkstrand went for what he did

If Lou Lamoriello offered Brock Nelson up to the league it would not cost him anything and the return would be plenty. There would definitely be salary involved but it's ridiculous to think 3 year, 6m a season 35 goal center isn't going to return anything because teams would need to move salary.

Not every owner in the league wants a team full of young boys.

If you are willing to take salary back then sure the return will be decent.

If you want to free up 3-5m in capspace in the process? Good luck finding a team that will help you out and even give you something decent in return in this market.
Bjorkstrand got a few mid-round picks and if I am a team with capspace that is looking to rebuild, I probably prefer Bjorkstrand to Nelson due to age reasons. Also Seattle has now 0 capspace available so one dancing partner is no longer available.

Not sure the needs of many teams but I wouldnt be surprised if the Wings took him for a 2nd, retained 2-2.5 millon on him, and then flip him for another 2nd.

Essentially Yzerman would be buying two second rounders for 4-5 million and cap space we more than likely will not need.

Anyone know any teams that would have interest in him @ 2.5-3 range? He is still a very usable NHLer with playoff experience

cap neutral or near cap neutral trades would be different.

in 2024 you potential have a big free agency off season with Mathews, Aho, and others.

Arizona is planning around signing him
if fir what ever reason on buffalo if Thompson crashedos and / or Mittkestadt diesnt do well thrn they will be8n the market fir a center. If they are fine thrn they coukd be a place to acquire decent players from teams needing to open up space for these teams looking to sign a UFA

agreed. To add….as I said above . Teams don’t want long term commitments on players like bjotprkstrand.

both buffalo and Anaheim have some young players they need to resign in 1-3 years and are uncertain on cap space.

buffalo has about a dozen. If they develop well and get signed buffalo might have only 8M in cap space in 2024 and have a fee others to resign in 2025 so they could not take on a $5M+ salary

that limited the market to only Seattle and Chicago who could take Bjorkstrand without sending back 23 man salary

what teams EVER have done 1 full season pass thru 50% salary retentions…let alone 2?

deadline trades that involved the pass through getting a 2nd might have been about $500K in real dollars paid for only the remainder of the season. Yet we are talking 2 full seasons for $3.5M in real dollars

It's not that easy, Varly has a 16 team no trade clause. Maybe teams he was willing to go to didn't need a Goalie. It was already reported that he wouldn't waive for Edmonton or Washington who obviously both needed a goaltender.

once you get past who he can go to, you have the cap space isdue where only a few teams could afford him even if they send back a goalie making $1M.

the goalie market is dead till in season when a goalie is injured long term

Not a nice thing to do to a player, but if a team is desperate for cap space, they can always bury one or two less desired players in the AHL instead have to lose assets. So comes to worse, there is that option.

And what does that accomplish?
You realize that they would still count mostly against the cap ( you only save around 1M if you bury someone in the AHL IIRC. The rest still remains on your cap and you also have to replace them with someone (who will count for more than half of that against the cap) so the savings are very minimal).

That "loophole" was fixed a longtime ago.

This is pretty much what they've done with Ross Johnston. Give him a million a year until 2045 so no one wants the term added to their payroll and he's easily buried to be brought up when needed.

Can only do that so many times and you'd have to have a roster constructed like Torontos or some other top-heavy team.

Even if it's only 2.5 million that they'd need to let go of it's still a player from the active roster.

We'll see (sometime in September).

Ross was recalled on 1/29/18 and has been on the NHL roster ever since . Not sure how this is what they have done with him . ( bury him in the AHL )

Moving Bailey is going to be so expensive to the Islanders.

I’m a vacuum, Nelson should have a lot of value. But we’re not in a vacuum. If Nelson were waived today, I’m not sure he’d get claimed. Who claims him? No contender has the cap space. So which non contender signs up for 3 years of a 30+ year old that doesn’t time up with their core and won’t have treated value until he’s a rental in 2+ years.

sounds like Lou is just trying to trade Bailey. That was actually smart about the Knights trading Pacioretty. They got all the best years of Patches and then moved him out just as he exits his prime.

It's good to have something to say other than cap dump. "Well I'd love for us to keep Pacioretty because just look at these stats, but we brought in Eichel and Pietrangelo so someone has to go. You have yourself a bargain here!"

Now it is Bailey. "We'd love to keep Bailey because look at his value to us here, but we need extensions for Barzal, Romanov, and Dobson. Also look over here at this rumor that we are getting Kadri! You could totally take advantage of this situation and steal Bailey away from us!". And they clear 5 million this year and next for a forward in their mid 30s.

Bury 2 contracts in the AHL. 11.1M becomes 13.3. Sign Kadri @7 (as has been rumored) and kick the can down the road one year (or to the TDL when people get stupid) by giving one year deals to Dobson (4), Romanov (1.25) and Bellows (1 -- or make him one of the buried contracts). It will cost more long term as the next contracts for Dobson and Romanov will get pricier, but it solves the immediate problem.

Exactly, Perhaps it might open back up if any goalies get hurt during preseason.

LOL There's noway Nazem Kadri is getting $9,000,000 per plus high term. He needs to decide whats better the money or length of the term he can't have both.

Why? Isn’t he still an effective player?
Because GMs aren't going to help out Lou so he can sign Kadri, If Lou wants to move out Bailey it's going to cost him big time. Perhaps as much as a 1st or 2 2nds or a 2nd and B prospect he's 32 making 2 x $5,000,000 and i'm sure few teams are dying to take on that cap hit right now. Most teams are either over tight up against the cap or have an internal budget like Anaheim and Buffalo.

who is willing to take him?

only 4-5 teams have the cap space
their rosters are set so they don’t need to acquire him fir two years
everyone knows the reason for the deal is to help the isles create room fir Kadri.
“it’s a what’s in it for us To take him because we don’t need him”

many of the teams who have space aren’t interested in acquiring him if it means blocking a young player from. Developing by pushing them down in the line up or forcing them back down to the AHL.

sure you could get fair value in a cap neutral trade with another team. That’s not the point ofthe trade.
