I think it's a combination of both, and the fact that it's a bunch of mostly first time winners. 16 and 17, most of the Pens had won before. The last 3 before that were teams that won recently prior to that as well.

2012 would have been the last team a team won that hadn't won in a long time/ever. Social Media was certainly prevalent at that time, but not to the extent it is now.
