Rangers place defenceman Tony DeAngelo on waivers

I know SY dumped him once, but that was in TB. Some undisciplined penalties & still learning the defensive side of the game, but you can't refute his (badly needed on our team) offensive production.

Obviously a talented PMD, 53pts/68gp last yr.

Rotowire per SN (1/30):
"
Impact
DeAngelo's still in search of his first point after scoring 53 last season, but this was his best game of the campaign. He has eight shots in his last two games after totaling just five in his first three, and DeAngelo was moved back onto the top power-play unit for this one, logging 5:15 of ice time with the extra man. Undisciplined penalties have occasionally landed DeAngelo in the doghouse, but he hasn't picked up any PIM since being benched earlier this season and seems to be on the verge of a breakout performance.

Worth taking a shot on?

Drafted by Yzerman in 2014.

53 points in 68 games last year.

$4.8 million cap hit this year and next, then RFA.

I don't think Stevie likes him.

He's a righthanded offensive D with some defensive issues.

I think I'd pick him up. Maybe just to trade him.
But I don't think Stevie does.

What little I know about the guy isn't good, and I'm not talking about politics. Suspended for pushing a ref. Benched by the team for maturity issues.

When you're sitting a guy and replacing him with Brendan friggin Smith, that does not speak well of a player.

Yzerman drafted him. But 'off-ice issues' and that contract?...

Yeah, I didn't realize he made that much. I know the attitude issues are there and the maturity issues are there as well, but his PP skills alone are what entice me. Our powerplay is pathetic and there is no denying his vision and PP abilities. His number last season were insane. 53 PTS in 68 games, and a +12.

Agreed 100%. We're not in the position to deny On Ice Talent, regardless of some off ice issue(s), those can be overcome.

$4.3 salary; $4.8 caphit through 21-22, pending RFA. 1pt/6gp, -6. Worth the small risk, potential trade bait. Moves Staal to the Uber Minivan.

I wonder if Tony being a known conservative & voicing his opinion on social media has anything to do with his being waived, even a little bit. ?? (not wanting to open up a can of political worms discussion, just wanna know if that was the actual reason behind the waiving...as it relates to hockey).

I have a hunch SY will pick him up, we need the talent infusion & a shakeup too. 2 birds, 1 stone, even if that stone is kryptonite. (kryptonite still has it's merits, some would argue it's precious).

I like the fact that SY knows his character and therefore have the ability to assess the guy properly. From what I’ve read, DeAngelo seems like some kind of Sean Avery type of person, but with higher upside. If SY believe that there is potential to carve out some value, he’ll claim him for sure.

Free 50 point D man?

Twitter/personality issues or not you have to take that for free if you have the shot. If he comes in and causes a rift or is a problem just re-waive him.

With our D it's absolutely worth a free gamble.

In all seriousness, DeAngelo is the exact opposite of what is needed on this team.

We need good hockey players, yes. We also need good locker room guys to help the kids along when things are going really shitty and the losses are piling up. They help keep spirits up during the bad times. Everything we know about DeAngelo is that he's the kind of guy who does not get along with his teammates anywhere.

He was suspended by his junior team for making racist remarks to a f***ing teammate. Suspended again for abusing an official. Suspended in the AHL for unprofessional conduct. Bounced from 3 NHL teams now, this last time after yelling at an official, slamming the door on the penalty box and his coach this season has said DeAngelo has maturity issues.

We're a bad team with or without DeAngelo, and he might make the PP better but he's also the kind of guy I don't want anywhere near our developing kids.

EDIT: There's a quote from Raylen Givens that absolutely applies to Deangelo

"If you run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole. If you run into assholes all day, you're the asshole."

Agreed 100% about "carving out value". We're not in the position to deny On Ice Talent, regardless of some off ice issue(s), those can be overcome. If he's as bad as Avery, SY will straighten him out or failing that will trade him for a net positive 2nd/3rd maybe? Win-win for us.

Yeah, this trade-bait idea: who the hell is going to trade for a locker room cancer even at 50% that contract? The guy has major challenges both on and off ice, that's why he's on waivers now and is not being traded

Yep.

Yzerman knows him. If he really is that bad, he'll avoid him.

If he believes DeAngelo has matured a bit, then he'll make a claim.

Yeah... guy could be Donald Trump idiot fan and done stupid thing on Twitter... but man...

...he is exactly what we need. Young, PP specialist, great puckmover and could be that 3rd righty to have perfect pairs.

Yzerman has traded him once, but so he did with Namestnikov.

It's an asset offered for free just like Namestnikov. It has only positive value added.

Contract isn't multi-year either if he becomes a problem and need toget rid of him.

There's no risk. At all.
I'd say a huge difference is that Yzerman traded Deangelo specifically because he didn't like his character. The kid had 43 points in 69 AHL games when he was 20 and got shipped away for a 2nd round pick.
