In terms of total money, it was probably worse before the 2013 lockout when teams could add more years.

In terms of AAV, I've never seen anything like this summer.

The fact is we don't know. Every insider said the Rangers had no interest and all of a sudden he's a Ranger. Sometimes accurate rumors come down, and other times, teams keep it close to the vest.

But I would be absolutely floored if the Rangers offered him the most AAV, the most years, or the most total dollars.

Yea, I'm not sure this summer was really record breaking by any means honestly. Most of the huge AAVs are on extensions, not UFAs anyways. Thornton at 8M is the only FA over Shattenkirk, no? And if you include extensions, the Toews/Kane summer may give it a run but depends if McDavid signs.

Most of the reporting was that the Rangers weren't going to break the bank for him and that ended up being true. They could have also thought that Shattenkirk would never accept the deal they offered him and didn't think they had a chance but who knows what the landscape was.

I can see it being the most AAV (I don't think a 7 year deal would have been higher than 6.5M, if that) but definitely not the most years or most total dollars. It seems that Shatty wanted a shorter term deal and was obviously specifically eyeing the Rangers.. so I think this was probably a competitive deal to what he was offered at 4 years. We'll never know, but I can envision this being the exact deal the Devils offered, which Shattenkirk took to the Rangers and told them he would take it with them.. and it was just too good for them to pass up.

We played McDonagh with Girardiiiiiiiiiiiiii. Our depth on the right side has been ****ing abysmal for years now. That's why Ranger fans are responding the way were are. We don't need you tell us all about how your good player sometimes makes boneheaded mistakes. We've been watching actual bad defensemen make awful decisions for the past 2-3 seasons.

That doesn't make any sense. Girardi was terrible, cool. Lehtera was completely unplayable. We replace him with Schenn, who a lot of Flyers fans say can't play center worth a crap. That kinda puts a damper on him. He's still a great add, and an upgrade, but he isn't without flaw. Same with Shattenkirk. The stuff that was said about fans only being negative on him once Parayko started showing out and him still being a first line D are both untrue, no matter how bad Girardi is. It's kind of irrelevant. He isn't a better player than he is on his own just because he's following a garbage can you had playing there last year.

It's not irrelevant at all. He fills several needs of ours while replacing corpses. RH shot, offensive guy, good at moving the puck and great on the PP. We couldn't have gotten a better guy for our needs on a contract under 7 million through free agency and we probably only have one prospect who could one day be close to what Shattenkirk is. We already have guys that just focus on the defensive side of the game, we didn't need more of the same.

He's not terrible defensively. He's about average. He's very good at not causing turnovers that lead to odd-man rushes. He's very good at getting his shots through to the net.

What makes everyone think he's so bad defensively is he makes a lot of bad breakout passes when starting a rush from his own end. Like a lot. Like one complete head-scratching ***** of a pass every other game.

He's a fine NHL defender. He's just not a 1st pairing guy. He's not an elite defender. He's an elite PP specialist who is fine in other areas of the game, but is prone to making mental errors.

Price, Kuznetov, Thornton, Vlasic more than Shattenkirk, Fowler, Marleau real close

Kevin Shattenkirk is everything that is RIGHT about an athlete. He left multiple years and many millions of cash on the table to live out his childhood dream. I always liked Shattenkirk but I respect him a whole lot right now. And I'm a Flyers fan who needs to face him in the division. He's a grounded person who was raised right. Good for him.

He's average at best defensively, but great on the side of the ice that gets you paid. This is the market for 50+ point D's. Pair him with a great partner and hope for the best. Solid signing for the Rangers.

Right.. so Thornton is the only FA that got more AAV than Shattenkirk. I was perfectly correct actually.

Price, Kuz, Vlasic, Fowler were all extensions, not FAs

He'll be part of a USA Olympic D pairing with McDonagh.

This is easily the best deal of the FA period. I thought it was going to end up being an albatross, but this is just a solid deal - not too long on term without breaking the bank.

Is this where I get to complain that NY should be penalized cap-wise because everyone wants to play in Manhattan?

No, he's bad at turnovers. The way he possesses the puck is just different in his own end, like he has less confidence or something. He creates many costly turnovers in his own end. His ability to get shots on net is fantastic. That's one thing he always had on Pietrangelo, who at times isn't even close. Despite the fact that Shattenkirk is at times much more inclined to facilitate, when he does shoot, it's almost always on goal and his shot selection is very good. He doesn't force it like a lot of higher goal defensemen.

New York Rangers is the only team that I buy the hype about players just wanting/having to play there.

This Americans with the big apple ***** are for real.

Rangers get to benefit.

The Rangers are openly trying to suck this year and I love it.

Not because I hate the Rangers either.

He has been fine the first few games, nothing special but not horrible either. The team sucks though, which was expected because we are rebulding, and Marc Staal should retire. If you wanna see a horrible player, watch Marc Staal....
