NYI gets Philipp Grubauer

Washington gets a 3rd rounder(think Scott Darling trade)

Calgary gets Thomas Greiss

NYI gets a 2nd and a 5th

Calgary shores up their goaltending for the next three years and Washington gets something for a guy they would lose in expansion.

Flame away

Washington declines easily. Grubauer compares favorably to Martin Jones at the time of his trade, and he pulled in substantially more than a 3rd. I know the expansion draft will drag down values, but Washington would happily accept losing Grubauer in expansion because it protects skaters (like Nate Schmidt) that have a higher impact on the on-ice roster than a back-up goaltender. Schmidt would also return more than a 3rd in a trade (even with an expansion draft looming), so either way this trade would be Washington settling for far beneath market value.

Easy pass.

NYI sticks with Greiss.

He's the best goalie they've had in a while.

While I understand not doing it because you could lose a dman but how is Grubauer worth more than Scott Darling? IMO they are pretty equal.

Grubauer will cost you a 1st+. You have to not only pay what Grubauer is worth, but also what Nate Schmidt is worth (since the Caps will lose him in expansion as well).

As an isles fan no interest in grubauer and no, you are out of your friggin mind if you think he will cost a 1st + lmao

Calgary will simply deal with Vegas.
Whoever of: Grubauer, Fleury & Raanta that they don't want; Calgary will likely end up with.

Why is 25 year old RFA Philipp Grubauer being traded for the same price as the rights to impending UFA, 28 year old Scott Darling?

Scott Darling was a pending UFA. That 3rd was just for his contract rights.

Grubauer is much more comparable to Martin Jones, Robin Lehner, or Frederik Andersen. Still shy of the Schneider/Varlamov level, but commanding substantial trade value.

A 1st, sure. But a 1st plus? Unlikely.

Because Grubauer is a 25 year old RFA, and Darling is a 28 year old UFA? Also Grubauer is a good goalie in every facet of the game, whereas Darling may be a beast at stopping the puck and vision speaking, but IQ, rebound control, puck moving, etc. is relatively poor? Also expansion plays a role.

haha Go Garth Snow he just got more for Greiss than he gave up for Grauber. So Isles upgrade their goaltending and get a 2nd, 5th round pick for a 3rd round pick
