Great trade! 1st Round pick and a decent prospect in Leipsic for two guys that are UFA's and both want big raises. Franson was playing terrible defence lately and anyone who thinks Jokinen is in the long term (even two weeks) plans of the Leafs doesn't know what they are talking about, it was simply about the Leafs taking some salary to allow the Preds some space. Leipsic was known as the best agitator in jrs. and is 32nd in AHL scoring, as a rookie. I find it funny how every person just looks at the short term value of the trade.

Huh? Are you talking to your self again? Not many complain about the value we got back. In fact, most posters seemed pretty pleased by the return.

There is a small but vocal group that think that there could have been more offered towards the deadline.

Morrison is not at the helm anymore. Mark Hunter is. He will be in charge of the draft there is absolutely no question about it.

I also believe Hunter had a huge involvement with getting Leipsic. He loves those kind of guys. Small, skilled, but tough as nails.

Me too, it may be premature but I am excited just seeing the first real signature looking move by the new generation (shan/dubas/hunter).

The start of the rebuild is starting to feel like the real start for this management team where as last off season still felt like feeling out moves.

Even Nonis thinks (as per his interview) there could have been more offered at the trade deadline. He also thinks there could have been less offered at the trade deadline.

They were satisfied with the value and pulled the trigger.

The thing with a rebuild is that you need vets in the lineup to a) help insulate the young guns from being rushed into key roles b) provide leadership. The problem in the past is the Leafs give up picks/sign guys to overly long term deals which hurts the team for many years. I have no issues if they choose to go out and lets say sign a guy like Jokien (in his case re-sign) for 2-3 years, this gives a guy like Nylander or Strome (assuming we draft him) time to develop without being rushed into a pivotal role too soon.

This is exactly why you need someone like Joe Thornton

Why are they waiting on a bozak deal for a 2nd rounder but they pulled trigger on Franson/santo? they must think someone will give them another 1st rounder for bozak at deadline.

If the free agent market is cap crunched, maybe Brad Richards is someone who can perform that role for us. Or more realistically, a guy like Nazem Kadri could be the guy to just take the pressure while the younger kids develop.

Maybe someone like Dallas will want some immediate help..

Leipsic....Luca Caputi. Tough....can score....closer to being an nhl player than 2015 pick...... heard it all before. They better go through with a true rebuild instead of trading ufa middle of the pack players on a terrible team, call it a rebuild then be mid pack team again with mid level drafts and no chance of winning in the playoffs or winning the cup.
dominic moore = 2nd
antropov = "
ponikarovsky = 21 yr old prospect to speed up the rebuild
stajan, hagman, mayers, white = phanoof
etc... last rebuild was a joke this one better not be

I have mixed feelings on this trade.

I really like the fact we got Leipsic. He doesn't have huge upside but could be a real nice piece on a third line if he pans out. And of course first round picks are always nice to have.

But trading Cody Franson at this point in his career could come back and make you look really stupid down the road. On a good team like Nashville he might really shine. Out of all the guys the Leafs have let go to free agency over the last years Franson is the one I might have seriously thought about keeping. Defencemen like him don't grow on trees. But then again maybe we'll still have a shot at bringing him back as a UFA.

Olli Jokinen is a bit of a wildcard. He's having a terrible year and his value right now is almost zero. But if he comes here, gets some icetime over the next couple weeks, and starts putting up some decent numbers his value could potentially shoot up significantly in a short period of time.

on a good team Cody is not the #1-2 guy. so even if he shines - it's because he's maximising his minutes the little he has.

honestly.
1st round pick. + a prospect. + whatever we get for Jokinen. sounds good to me

If Franson gets his 6M per year term deal the more power to him but it won't be from Leafs who are at 3.5M per year which is right where a PP specialist should be. No chance he will sign with either Preds or Leafs. Leafs have Gardiner to give the PP minutes too. After unloading Phaneuf then Rielly and Polak will get more minutes and team defence will improve.

I love this deal. Frankly shocked some people think that it's bad. It's not always good to wait till deadline. Remember in those 7 games Franson and Santa could have helped us win. We replaced two NHL players who we tried to sign but couldn't with two young players.

This could all add up to the difference of drafting a guy like Strome or Marner instead of someone lower in the draft.

I guess everyone needs something to complain about.

The Leafs flip 2 UFAs for good prospects and another piece they can flip. They are also able to approach the players that they traded in Free Agency. Only Leafs haters will think this was a bad trade.
You're trading these guys to contenders, and contenders 1st round picks are going to be late ones. That has to be expected. You're not going to be making trades with other bottom feeders for high 1st rounders.

Any worry about franson's physical? He has a hip problem that seems to have effected him latley. Would be the leafs luck that Cody doesn't pass the physical and the trade is voided.

You can trade injured players as long as the team acquiring him is fine with it.

Franson's hip is a minor issue. Robidas was traded despite being injured last deadline IIRC.

Not going to lie, I was hoping for a better return then what we got. That being said I am not disappointed. I like the 1st and while offers may have been dying down now we are still two weeks out. That being said an injury to Franson or Santo gets you a return of zero. Nonis did well and I think Leipsic will play in the NHL, just not this year which is fine by me.

Not going to lie though the Fla scenario with Kessel, intrigues me as is it only a stud or all their young talent? Is their 1st this year in play? Right now it sits at 12, could get worse but isn't far off from being top 10 either. Same with Phaneuf in terms of interest, these trades may not be made now, but there is interest and we won't have to eat money or take a negative return. Exciting times in leafland for those who embrace the rebuild

More realistically?

They are looking for a fair offer on Bozak, and aren't getting any.

People overvalue Bozak here. This isn't a scenario where the Leafs are waiting to see what best value they can get. More so waiting to see if they can get fair value for him, because teams aren't exactly lining up to throw picks and prospects at a player as limited as Bozak

Don't know how anyone can be disappointed with the return.

Realistically? Franson for a 1st in a year where not many teams are moving their first

Then Santorelli for a decent prospect. The receiving of the 1st means you can add a piece here that is closer to the NHL, than say, a 2nd round pick, which is always preferred.

Two players, about to be lost for nothing. Now you've got 2 valuable future assets at a time when the rental market hasn't really flushed itself out.

Like I said not disappointed but was hoping for more. I see what everyone is saying and I do like the trade. However you look at last year when a Douglas Murray nets 2-2nd round picks it is easy to hope for more. I like the idea of a player like Leipsic on the roster one day, every team needs that skilled pest. Nonis did good as injury or a market drop could've hurt us and we do get worse faster in theory.

ya but don't over look "strength of draft class" in the year those picks are being traded from.

stronger the draft class, the more valued draft slots are.
