Seattle’s pro sports teams are getting cozy, which could have big ramifications down the road

Speaks to future cooperation/synergery between the local teams.

Couple Points. Baker speculates that Leiweke will be CEO/President of all OVG Seattle entities (Sort of like how Tim did with MLSE) and how Tod in Tampa

Also speculates that ROOT/OVG will get together and have MLS/NHL/NBA all on the same network.
Root, I do not believe exists any longer, it's either NBC Sports Northwest where the Blazers are now on, and only if the Mariners sell majority interest, you're still under AT & T synergy, and legally, that's to be watched as AT & T battle over acquiring Time Warner

Root still exists in the north west. I doubt that is going anywhere.

it may, tommy, never say never, AT & T owns 40% of said network, the difference is the Mariners are the majority owner, but you have to be prepared for anything... if the Mariners end up being sold, that's another flag.... the Mariners could decide to sell it.

Root exists still - they are majority owned by the Mariners. It is correct that they are part of the AT&T Sportsnet family, but they were not changed over to that name like it was elsewhere due to the Mariners' majority ownership most likely. NBCSNW is a separate entity from Root entirely - a competitor more the less that is more focused on Portland. They're not even on Comcast basic cable in Seattle for heaven sakes. I have felt for a long time the two entities should merge into one as there's not enough inventory for two networks in this region with the loss of live Pac-12 games to the P12N.

Mariners were recently sold to a local Seattle group.

They aren't going to pick the name logo colors until after the team is awarded.

Totems is trademark by some other group and not the NHL group.

First nations people seem to have a problem when sports teams named after them/affiliated with them. So why would Seattle go down that road?

And this is my main issue with the name. I think it would be a good name, but these concerns give me a little pause, especially when you consider that this region is very liberal politically and may not take too well to this type of nickname. That said, if the governor, who is very friendly with a lot of those interests down here, seems to be behind it, then perhaps there may be ways to make it so that it's culturally sensitive. It should be noted by the way that a lot of potential sponsors for this new team would be Native American casinos.....Emerald Queen, Muckleshoot, Snoqualmie, Tulalip and Angel of the Winds casinos all have some form of sponsorship arrangments now with WHL or other pro sports teams locally. The Muckleshoots even own the local horse racing facility, Emerald Downs.

The NHL group isn't gonna pick a name just cause the governor likes it.

.... true enough.... however its really up to ownership, Bruckheimer et al. They can do the fan poll thing, come up with a couple or 3 names ranked 1-3, if #1 doesnt pass for whatever reason with NHL legal etc, and if rejected it better be for a damn good reason because when it comes to this sort of thing the NHL itself is woefully inadequate, laughably incompetent in fact. See; Las Vegas Knights.... being sued up the ying-yang by the GD military & every podunk high school & hackey sack team from here to Peoria....

"Totems" is my favorite, history there, representative of the WC Native American culture RESPECTFULLY & if anyone trys to tell me that that moniker is somehow disrespectful, hijacks for commercial interests important spiritual beliefs & cultural iconography important exclusively to NA Natives... then they'll be talking to my hand. Absolute nonsense..... not listening.... way over the line, gone to far with PC insanity... see ya in court. Fed up, had enough with this BS over long standing team names being determined to be disrespectful & racist... when viewed through the PC prisms you will find someone, some group claiming foul, that its disrespectful, insulting, belittling.... so teams, leagues, just roll over, no problem, we'll change it.... weak.

Speaking of Bruckheimer...
why not choose one of the names
from his long list of producer/executive producer properties... ;)

Seattle Cold Case
Seattle Forgotten
Seattle Justice
Seattle Armageddon
Seattle Rock
Seattle Ref
Seattle Defiance

Or just call them the Seattle Kraken.

Bruckheimer uses the Kraken in many of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies series:

Call of the Kraken or Unleash the Kraken, rum in all.

I don't think Totems wouldn't present a problem with the native Americans not like the controversies with the NFL redskins or the MLB Indians.

I agree I am not sure what the negatives are with this name. Not my first choice but it seems to fit.

I hope that those in Seattle on the fringes of being a hockey fan or totally unfamiliar start watching now because this is absolutely when it gets real good!!!

I love it whether my team is there or not!!

You said it, K. I will tell you, this particular nickname as it pertains to the hockey history here in this town it's not lost on most people that we've had the Totems as a hockey team nickname here, hell, had we gotten the NHL back in the 70's when it supposedly was a possibility at that time, chances are that would have been the nickname for the team at that time.

That being said, because of the Native association to that name, you have to be very careful in this environment. The liberals here are that on steroids. If there's even one tribe - or even one person from one tribe that expresses opposition to it, it'll become radioactive in a hurry because of the media attention.

I agree with NWHF. Totems is not my first choice, but I'd be happy with it if you can make it so that everyone else is happy with it.

Well, if they want, they will find a way to say it affectes them and their ancestors. One of the claims could be that ''Totems'' as an object and as a name is not used by anyone else but First Nations. Just a thought tho, obviously I don't see the negative side of any of those names, being the Totems, the Redskins or the Indians.
