My vote would be for Emeralds. It's different from other NHL names without being minor league sports team wacky.

The last name I want to be see is Metropolitans nor do I want to see their S logo included in any design. I hate new organizations stealing things from past organizations to create phony connections that just aren't there. Let's say Coca-Cola folded and a new soft drink company started up in Atlanta, should they call themselves Coca-Cola or incorporate all or some of Coke's logo (assuming they could obtain the rights) just because they happen to based in the same city?

And before anyone pipes up about it, yes, I hate the fact that Smythe likely stole the Maple Leafs name from the Toronto International League baseball team.

No likely about it, they definitely borrowed the name from the baseball team. The baseball Maple Leafs were an established franchise at a time when baseball was considerably more popular in Canada when the Arenas/St. Pat's changed their name. The regimental badge story for the origin of the team name was almost assuredly an invention after the fact after the baseball Leafs had long since faded from memory, and the baseball Leafs were founded well before even WWI so it's not like there's a transitive military connection there.

And to be clear, that's not knocking the Leafs. The New York football Giants were named after a baseball team that's now in San Francisco, and Chicago White Sox fans that hate the Cubs have no issues rooting for their team or the Chicago Bears, even though both the White Sox and the Bears were named after the Cubs.

Where they spend the rest of their time:
Seattle Traffic

I like it.. the logo could be the silhouette of a Prius-heavy traffic jam w/the Space Needle looming behind. Sort of reminiscent of the 8os Sonics' insignia.

I've never been to Seattle so in my head everyone looks like the hipster barista meme so I would go with "Seattle Hipster Baristas"

All I can say perspective Seattle fans is please please don't let your team be named the Kraken. It erks me to no end. It's a creature of Norwegian folklore that lives in the North Atlantic and has literally nothing to do with your fine city. Get your team a name that reflects your culture and history. I've been to Seattle multiple times for Mariners games. I know you guys have some incredibly diverse culture with a rich local history, use it.

You do understand that in bankruptcies, this is exactly what happens right? Or even more explicitly, companies purchase old trademarks all the time. Perhaps you've seen ads for the luxury watch company Shinola... who purchased the trademarks of the original shoe shine of the same name in order to borrow its luster. The situation you are describing happens all the time in the real world, it's just a form of branding. Frankly, it's no different then countries like Benin or even Korea naming themselves after ancient kingdoms.

We have a strong Scandanavian Culture and Shipping industry in our city. It perfectly makes sense.

If you want to argue that it sounds like a minor league name, I mean many NHL teams sound like minor league names. The Kraken does reflect our culture and history.

It really doesn't it has absolutely nothing to do with your culture anymore than it has to do with Winnipegs culture who also has a large Scandinavian community. It's a beast from the north Atlantic. You guys can't even see the Atlantic from where you are.

Well except for the fact that the maritimes/shipping is still a major part of the city, and is

Giant Squid don't exist in the Pacific Ocean?

Seattle is also on the Sea, Another reason why it makes sense. Winnipeg, not so much.

Absolutely they do but the mythological beast the Kraken doesn't have anything to do with the Pacific Ocean or Seattle. It's history is traced to the North Atlantic off the coasts of Norway, Iceland, Canada and Greenland. I mean I'm splitting hairs here but it just erks me. Come up with something better that actually has to do with your local culture and history not just because it sounds cool.

How many penguins are there in Pittsburgh? Are there a lot of dinosaurs in Toronto? Bulls and Bears in Chicago? Grizzlies in Memphis? Lakes in Los Angeles? Tigers and Lions in Detroit? Jaguars in Jacksonville? Bison in Buffalo? Horses in Indianapolis? Panthers in Charlotte? Rams in Los Angeles?

Most of these have reasonable explanations.

- Grizzlies, Lakers, Colts, Rams were the names of the franchises when relocated.
- Bulls - Chicago has a legendary meatpacking industry
- Bills - Buffalo Bill was a legendary figure, and besides... Buffalo is literally the name of the city, so there's that too.
- Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears - nods to the Tigers and Cubs
- Tigers - A reference to a military unit, like Blackhawks or Maple Leafs
- Penguins - the arena was already called the Igloo. The team named followed.

Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars were picked purely for the sake of being big fierce animals. Nothing more complicated than that. They didn't make any sort of claim to a cultural connection, even though people occasionally claim to have seen panthers in remote parts of NC.

Toronto Raptors is probably the most closely comparable. That name was chosen because dinosaurs were popular in the wake of Jurassic Park. Likewise, Krakens are a pop culture thing right now with Pirates of the Caribbean and Game of Thrones. Ten years from now, when the trend has passed, it will sound as dated as Raptors.

My point was, it's just a nickname. Who cares if some mythical sea monster is from the Atlantic or Pacific? If it's a cool name with a cool logo, I'll get over it pretty quickly.

Some of these names actually have background though. The Penguins are called so because of their arena which was known as the Big Igloo at the time. Which obviously has nothing to do with Penguins... The Raptors name was dumb, it was chosen because the film Jurassic Park was really popular at the time. Bulls pay homage to Chicago's status as the meat packing capital of the world. The Bears were named to tie in with the Cubs. Grizzlies, Rams, Colts and Lakers relocated from places where their names actually made sense and probably should have been changed. The Detroit Tigers were named after a local military unit and the Lions were named to tie in with the Tigers. The Jaguars were a fan chosen name for the local Jaguar at the Jacksonville Zoo who was making headlines at the time as the oldest known Jaguar in the world. Buffalo are Bison and they are actually called the Sabres they just have a Buffalo in their logo. Panthers was dumb and basically just chosen because it sounded cool. Don't do what the Panthers did.

I just think more thought should go into a team name than "it's cool looking and sounding". Some might not agree but for the sake of culture it's just better.

Jags were a fan chosen name because the local Zoo's Jaguar was making headlines at the time as the oldest known Jaguar in the world. Fans kind of clung to it.

But I agree if you go with something like the Kraken or Raptors based on some recent pop culture trend you are going to look really dated for choosing it when the popularity of whatever thing you picked is no longer popular.

Well yeah, I've suggested Seattle Chinooks for years but nobody ever listens to me or something to do with salmon like Steelheads or whatever. Tie it in with the other teams colors of blue, green and white or silver and you could come up with a bad ass logo and color scheme.

There's plenty of stupid names out there. The New York (Tex's) Rangers are a big one that just get a pass because they've been around forever. Same thing with Boston Bruins, which isn't even in the correct language and was mostly just there to allow use of the color brown, which isn't even a thing with them anymore.

Time makes all names seem okay. The Raptors were outdated as soon as they were named, but they're now the most famous raptor in Canada as long as the Jurassic Park franchise doesn't reboot again.

Time heals all stupid decisions is the point, I guess.
