Jeff is a world class dork as a commentator, but it still surprised me with all of his history here.

Exactly. He always struck me as a guy who never put in as much work as others off the ice. One of my friends was tailgating on a game when O'Neill was doing the Hurricane siren before the game. Was the season opener in 2011-2012. For one, it's crazy that he ***** on the Canes so much after doing this publicity stunt and the PTO, but oh well. Apparently he went to the tailgate and got pretty sloshed before the game. Not surprised, but saddened to hear about that, especially after his brother passed.

Also, apparently Bill Cowher has done the siren 4 times. Can't wait until he becomes the next NCSU football coach. :naughty:

Jeff has an inflated sense of how good he was as a player and thinks if he played his whole career in Toronto he'd be a legend. It seems like he doesn't realize that he would have been flayed there for how much he generally didn't give a damn and stayed drunk between cities. If not for Rod Brind'Amour and Ron Francis leaning on his ass so hard he'd be another footnote in draft picks that didn't live up to expectations. It's unfortunate that he doesn't recognize that the leadership on this team is what made his career. Before those two and after those two he turned into the pumpkin he was meant to be.

Not surprising though, really. There are what.... maybe 500,000 Hurricanes fans in the world? There are probably 50,000,000 people that would like to believe it's a hick gong show down here and that we should move. Who do you think fledgling media figure Jeff O'Neill is going to pander to in order to cement some legitimacy and get a "cheap pop" as is known in pro wrestling vernacular? Not much to see here.

Heard they tried out a new goal song and it was terrible. Anyone know what the song is?

Not sure what the song is, not sure how I felt about it. My first thought when hearing it was that it was identity seeking and to me seemed to be trying to create the whole Chelsea Dagger situation in NC. My 2 year old however LOVED it...really LOVED it. He said "more goal pwease" after the song was over.

Not sure how I feel about this. Can definitely see their push for "identity" with marketing too. Just wish they'd seek more fan input with some of this stuff. Wonder if we'll new new unis in the next couple years.

Didn't that happen in Greensboro? If so, there's no denying the time there wasn't exactly up to NHL standards.

Not to the fault of Greensboro, that was the Canes fault. Don't forget: the AHL indoor attendance record is still a game in Greensboro the season before the Canes showed up. The Hurricanes came in with zilch of a marketing plan because they always had one foot out the door to Raleigh. Why would the fine people of Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem area support a team they weren't given a reason to support? I always raise an eye brow when folks dump on those 2 years. Revisionist history always seems to be afoot.

I wasn't intending to bad mouth Greensboro itself, just the situation as a whole. It was a lame duck season in an AHL arena where the fans had no reason to support the team long term.

Regardless of whose fault it was, I can totally understand a player from Toronto in 1997 -- before mascots were ubiquitous at hockey games -- standing there in an empty Greensboro Coliseum watching a man in a pig suit being dragged unconscious out of the Zamboni, and maybe feeling like this operation isn't quite up to NHL standards.

And you can understand that same player in 2015 giving no context for that story, furthering the narrative that Carolina is a circus undeserving of the holy Canadian game?

see i totally disagree

every time i go back to a canes game these last few years, i completely miss the nostalgia that the games used to have (i.e. cup run and few years after)

we need MORE c'mon c'mon c'mon lets go, MORE "i'm mad as hell" scene from network, more "the rising" at intermission. it's gone more punk rock, and less hometown hockey, and i honestly think it has taken away from the in-arena experience.

go back to what it was, stop all this new punk rock stuff.

C'mon c'mon c'mon is the lamest 3rd period entrance song in the history of entrance songs. It brings zero energy. Awful.

If anyone actually tries to argue that Jeff O'Neil is correct, just copy paste the infamous Ottawa Spartan playoff entrance video and the tweet by Mike Commodore wistfully musing that he should have clotheslined the man.

I don't know what you mean by that TBH. The pig story was told back in March, had nothing to do with whether Carolina deserves a team or not, and didn't require any context beyond "here's a crazy story from back in the early days of my career".

Besides, what context would make that scenario seem normal? A man was carted off an NHL rink on a stretcher, wearing a pig costume, because he got stuck inside a Zamboni. Does it help to know the arena was temporary? No.

It was just a funny story he told one time... we don't need to be sensitive about every single word the man says.

Context meaning when they first came here and were temporarily playing in Greensboro. I hadn't realized those comments were made in March, so not as bad, but it still serves nothing other than to perpetuate the ongoing narrative.
