It's Matthews and it's not close.
He's barely PPG against playoffs teams.
Guy is considered by many the 2nd best player but might not even hit 100 pts this year. Also not even his team's top scorer.
Yeah I hate the Leafs as a Habs fan but the best scorer in the game with 55 goals in 66 games who if he keeps going as such will break records is definitely not the most overrated player.

He is not better than McDavid, Mackinnon, Kucherov, Draisaitl or Makar.

When you are being outscored by your teammate, you cannot be considered a top 2 player in the NHL.

Sure but it's not like everyone is proclaiming him the second best player in the NHL, I haven't seen that claim in quite a long time actually

Still very confusing and very vague comments to ruin the topic.
I’ll simplify and specify:

You cited Ovechkin failing to surpass 90 points since 2010. Putting aside the obvious arbitrary threshold you set, you cited this as a negative. You took it at face-value, without discussion, evaluation, or context.

Then, you cited Ovechkin’s 2013 Hart Trophy, but did not take it at face-value. You used games-played, plus/minus, and team record to invalidate the award. In other words

Currently not better than Marchand either......when it actually counts.

I got booted from the 69 goal thread for saying, it meant nothing until they do something in the playoffs. Leafs fans guffawed and jumped all over me. I will stand by what I said though. 69 is impressive, sure. But, I promise you....if they get bounced Monday....that 69 will mean jack shit to every single Leafs fans out there...until about November 1st, 2024 when they are planning the next parade. Rinse....repeat.

How you gonna do hockey like that?

Of course they can. When Crosby was injured, Malkin had a sick season. He matched Ovechkin's shot count and put 12 goals in his sights. But usually, he plays on the 2nd line with a more defensive role. Crosby also had a 51-goal season but he's a playmaker. He can't shoot 1000 goals in the season like Ovechkin and carry the puck. In addition to a huge defensive involvement.

Hockey is not just a contest of who can score the most goals.

It literally is a contest of who scores the most goals. That's the metric by which the games are decided.

Matthews and Marner.

Toronto has two perennial Hart + Selke nominees in their top 6 but can never make the smallest dent in the playoffs. Does not compute.

Brady Tkachuk has to be up there. We're told he's built for the playoffs, when he's not even built for regular season. He wouldn't wear the C for any other team.

What kind of weird-ass take is that, in what world isn't he built for the regular season ? He was PPG last season, nearly PPG this season, on top of being a premier PF. As for the playoffs, it's not like he doesn't try, but he ain't alone on that team.

Not a Sens fan, but I know I'd take him anytime on my Habs.
