In a vacuum I'll go with Makar, he's the best defenseman in the league but some people act like the difference between him and the next tier of guys is the same as McDavid, which is just not true.

Otherwise, Vasi or maybe Heiskanen or Dahlin. Heisk/Dahlin are really good, but they haven't quite made the jump like the rest of that group of D has imo.

Adam Fox. Hyped up as the best D man in the game but he's clearly a tier below the true top guys. Lot of empty points and not nearly as good defensively as his reputation and Norris win suggest.

HM: Charlie McAvoy for similar reasons
Could you make an actual argument why this is the case? Without any evidence, these statements could just as easily be made about any player in the league

His actual argument is that this dude is a massive Rangers hater.

This year is by far Fox’s worst as a pro and yet he’s still better than any player who has ever put on a Hurricanes sweater

If we are talking about fanbases/media impressions and not overall... then its whichever Leafs player is having a good week.

Which isnt surprising since its the most popular team and the majority of the media is going to reflect that. Just because it makes sense they are overrated doesnt make it untrue though.

Does it matter how many shots he takes? How many other players have over 800 goals? I can name only two others. He’s a goal scorer. If you thought he was/is a player maker, that’s on you.

If you shoot 10 times per game like Ovechkin, the chances of scoring goals are obviously more obvious than if you spend your time defending, making passes to only shoot 3 times.

Raymond Bourque has the goals record for a defenseman. This record was also achieved by an incredible number of attempts. Other elite defenders would have broken his record if they had made it a goal.
Gretzky scored 894 goals without forcing.

It's easier to score 800 goals by shooting 7,000 times than a player like Crosby or McDavid.

Goalies don't count. But if you want to include a goalie I would put Oettinger. His reputation is built off of one playoff series against Calgary a couple years ago.

At least Shesty (and Vasi, and evenSorokin) have a track record of extended elite play, hardware, etc

eh, i don't know.

Matthews is legitimately the best goal scorer alive right now, and Marner and Nylander are truly elite players.

Now the Leafs team as a whole and their Cup Contender status may be overrated by Canadian media, but not those 3 individual players.

Batherson.

Ottawa in general has a bunch but the all offense-no defense players are insanely overrated.

Tage is up there too, Doesn't score a ton, and you still want another line to do the defensive heavy lifting.

Nobody is claiming that he plays defense. Ovechkin was overrated earlier in his career. By now, everybody that watches hockey knows what type of player he is. And of course if you still think that he’s scoring 50 or 60 goals a season, you are going to be overrating him. I still don think that he is overrated, but maybe you are expecting something from him that others don’t.
