Ha. This season hasn't even started. lol
If you think this injury is going away, you are fooling yourself. The surgery was supposed to take care of it and it's back. Some guys have bodies that have trouble handling the rigors of being a professional athlete. Bird is heading down that road.

Prediction: Mets will pitch well this season, but the team will be undone by the hitting, and fielding, although the fielding might be a lesser extent than previous seasons. Alderson did a nice job with the bullpen this offseason, but his position player decisions look pretty disastrous going into the season.

They are not trading their franchise player for garbage. They aren't the Orioles.

Whether or not they are and whether or not they conditionally should are 2 different things.

Cubs have already had to cut Arietta loose.
Do not have the arms. Betances is an immediate help for next 5 years if he plays to best form and extends.

Their INF is first rate, but there's room for improvement in OF.
Supposedly Bryce Harper and Bryant are close.
Harper maybe end of ride for Nats.
Maybe he is no longer applicable to NYY due to Stanton acquisition and Judge emergence.
If not next season, season after, he comes to Chicago no trade cost.
Maybe instead of waiting til after season, Nats move him at the last minute to get something.
Having a cost free Ellsbury, to keep or move, is useful.

Supporting fan base, they likely keep Bryant.
But if they don't have enough horses in competitive situation, they are likely to lose.

If they follow my suggestion, it could be like w/what Yanks did w/Chapman renting him out.
They need the extra talent to get over the hump, like it or not.

Jake Arietta is a 32yo who just signed a 3 year deal at $25 million/year who has been trending down the past 2 years. Kris Bryant is a 26yo making $11 million with 3 more years of arbitration who 2 years ago won RoY and MVP. Comparing the 2 like that makes no sense. That's like suggesting the Yanks trade Judge for 2 salary dumps and a mediocre reliever. Trading your best player for several mediocre players is not how you improve your team.

Is this exactly the same injury with Bird, or just a coincidence?

Either way, it's nice that we have depth, instead of inserting Holland or McLeod at 1B. Bless Cashman.

Bird has so much ability at the plate. A great bat. I hope the recovery goes smooth and he can be almost like a trade deadline acquisition in June.

Yankees impressive in Atlanta. A group of MLB regulars combine to shut down the Braves. Busy day for Stanton, driving in two, scoring twice, and walking.

For the reasons you stated, Arietta would not command the same return as Bryant.

My offer was not bad for Cubbies. Go back to what I originally said.
Some assets now for the 1 yr.
More assets if he extends beyond the 1 yr.

Cubs had talent and timing and won it all. Including rental of Chapman.
Then they had to start paying people.
They have kept most of their core.
Competition is catching/has caught up.
Bettances is possible difference maker in pen
free Ellsbury is useful, also tradeable esp if Harper comes on board fully flexible asset situation.
But if Bryant extended, then you are talking about a couple of serious prospects and pitchers. Sheffield, etc. types
So Cubs get value either way.

The need to pay Sanchez and retain pitching will not allow Yanks to keep Bryant more than a season or two, so long term it's moot.
