Wood is not good enough to only be average or below average defensively. He has to be one of the better players defensively since he will be getting so many DZone starts. Being good defensively gives him more breakaways and odd man rushes.

In all honesty, I think his problems in support offensively lead to how bad he is defensively (at least by Corsi numbers).

Last game was a solid game for his line, but more often than not, Wood finds himself in a poor position to support the play allowing the other team to break out with ease. It seems like he double commits a lot in the offensive zone by puck-chasing as well. That or there is a dump-in to him in the zone with no one else around him. So then he has no outlet even if he wins the puck and if he doesn't the gaps between him and the rest of the team is so large that it allows for an easy breakout.

His line seems to be slowing the play down a lot more of late and they've steadily been improving (aside from the Calgary game). He's been better in all of the above then when he first came here, but the double committing part seems to be an issue for him.

Miles needs to get better defensively, but he can easily be average and be an effective NHL player because of his style. As for generating offense from the defensive zone, yeah I get that and I think he's capable of figuring out where he needs to be in the defensive zone. It's not a complex concept when you play the wing. However, considering how well he's done generating odd man rushes, while still needing to learn the defensive side, it's not something we can say is holding him back at the moment. I expect big things from him, he's smart, eager and is filled with ambition. Plus having a father who played 750 NHL games, all those factors make me think he'll do and learn what he has to. I have tremendous faith in Wood, more than most I'd argue, him being a long time effective NHL player is a given, in my opinion. How fast he can reach his peak is the question.

Hall's suffering from a terrible 5v5 shooting percentage this year, but that's hella impressive.

He's fit really well alongside Henrique and Cammalleri production-wise.

His WOWY are definitely worrisome though: https://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/showplayer.php?pid=2248&withagainst=true&season=2016-17&sit=5v5

Hall and Zajac both have like 15 assists at even strength this year. Pretty impressive for both. I'd also imagine Hall's shooting percentage will improve as the team improves and he's not the sole catalyst for the offense. Too many times he's bringing the puck in by himself and teams keep him out of the dangerous areas.

4th best forward in possession today. All this NHL time has really ruined him.

I don't mean to be flip but was there ANY forward that was actually good in possession today? If we were scoring today's game like the NFL with time of possession the Sharks might have had 45 minutes' worth.

Cammy, PAP, Wood, Blandisi and Henrique were all positives at even strength.

Let me know when he gets above 40% for the season.

I don't care what his total for the season ends up being as long as he shows improvement.

Since his promotion to the top 6, corsi numbers at 5v5:

LA, 57.14%
WSH, 23.08%
DET, 40%
CGY, 25%
CBJ, 52.38%
BUF, 60.87%
SJS, 52.94%

For a mean of 44.48%.

I fail to see a player who's drowning in an assignment above his head.

His linemates Henrique and Cammy over the same span:

Rico

LA, 63.16%
WSH, 31.25%
DET, 45%
CGY, 16%
CBJ, 54.17%
BUF, 50%
SJS, 53.33%

Mean, 44.70%

Cammy

LA, 58.33%
WSH, 29.41%
DET, 47.83%
CGY, 22.73%
CBJ, 54.55%
BUF, 56.67%
SJS, 60%

Mean, 47.07%

Cammy is slightly above his full season numbers over this span, Rico slightly below. So Wood's not a drag on them, either.

He's keeping up.
