Gretzky was traded. Nobody is untouchable.

Gretzky was traded when he was 27 and it was financially motivated; there was no motivation from Edmonton to improve the team present or future with that trade. In today's world nobody is trading away a 22 year old franchise C superstar just entering his prime unless one of the three conditions are met:

1. Their hand is forced and the player wants out
2. The player is no longer playing like a franchise player
3. The overpayment is so far beyond ridiculous you can't say no. As fantastic as that OP is, it's not that.

As soon as you trade away that player you'll spend the next decade+ hoping to win the lottery so you can replace him because franchise C's like this are next to impossible to find outside the top few picks. And elite talent like that is the biggest difference maker in putting teams over the top in a league with so much parity. It's not a coincidence that since the salary cap was implemented, 10 of the 14 cup winning teams have been led by a player they drafted themselves in the top 2 picks in the draft. Depth is important sure, but elite talent trumps all. Especially up the middle.

There is no guarantee. Matthews is proven 22 year-old 40+ goal scorer on place for 50+ with a shot at winning the Rocket. You don't trade such a player for future assets.
True it would be very hard to trade that value. But at least the proposal isn’t Matthews for a bunch of spare parts. This is the type of trade that makes the leafs way better in the future. Not now. They would not make the playoffs this year with that trade. Probably not next year either. However the next years after that are almost guaranteed.

The future is now. They are already a playoff team. They need to upgrade their blueline and a goalie who doesn't choke in game 7s to progress further in the playoffs. A struggling 28 year-old Josh Manson and bunch of prospects don't make the Leafs any better then they are right now and again there is no guarantee they will in the future.

Let's trade our franchise player for toughness.
I'll give you Looch, Bennett and Two 1sts for AM34 then.

Oh wait this is from feb. But anyway how many paragraphs did the OP type explaining his brilliant fanboy rationale.

I like the idea of a deal with the Kings...

Matthews + Dermott for Byfield + Turcotte

Toronto could then use the available cap space to sign Hoffman... or offer sheet Barzal or Dubois

Only players in NHL that the Leafs would trade Matthews for are the following:

McDavid (Leafs add)
MacKinnon (Leafs add)
Point (Tampa adds maybe a small + but they would need to add salary)
Barkov (Leafs wouldn't do 1 for 1 especially with Barkov having an expiring contract before Matthews)
Eichel (Leafs wouldn't do 1 for 1 - BUF fans would say same thing)

Leafs won't trade their cornerstone franchise (top 5 centre in NHL) for anyone who isn't of similar age. Leafs are also trying to win in next 1-3 years if the player doesn't fit that timeline it would never happen.

Doughty and Villardi for Matthews and Dermott. Don't think Drew would wave for Toronto but will make the Leafs a better team.

What a horrible trade for the Leafs. Doughty is good but another ridiculous contract and is already 30 years old. How many good years left? Ducks offer which is better than this one is still not enough for a franchise centre, who still has room to grow and is probably in the top 5 in the league. No thanks.

No they don’t. You don’t trade away your 2 best players if you want to win a Cup.

Example: Crosby/Malkin x3, Kane/Toews x3

What they should have done was not sign Tavares and gone after a stud D instead. But that’s in the past.

There is no easy fix, but the best course is trade Nylander for a top 4 D like Dumba, Manson, or Pesce. Let Barrie walk in FA and use that money to sign a 2nd line winger in FA.
Here’s the problem when you bring in Kane/Toews, how many Cups do they have as 10.5 million dollar players? Zero.

A lesser extent that applies to Malkin and Crosby because their contracts were relatively low but even they had to wait a few years for their % of the cap to go down to get the needed depth.

This is why the Matthews contract was out to lunch from day 1 and compounded with the cap not going up. Marner may have had a chance with his contract if the cap kept going up but even if the cap did keep going up it might not have mattered. Now The Leafs won’t see any value to those contracts at any point.

Why only single out Matthews? Eichel for his 10 mil contract has yet to play a meaningful game in April . McDavid has stacked up some personal accolades but for 12.5 mil player he's failed to take his team into the playoffs for 3 consecutive years.

I would sooner trade away the color blue from the teams jerseys than Matthews. He's literally the only untouchable player on the entire roster.

Seriously? 30? Weber is 35 and would be your #1 pairing RD now. LA could eat a little salary but Matthews makes more per year now.

Doughty would eat up the first line of the other team and Reilly, Brodie and Muzzin would fit into a dominant Top4.

It's one thing not to want to do a deal but worrying about Doughty at 30 is kind of silly. He'll be a stud for pretty much the entire contract.

It’s called context. The post I quoted didn’t mention them, why would I bring them up? There’s no need to be so sensitive.
