Except goals and points are actually a measurable statistic. He’s really good defensively needs to be backed up with actual stats other than just saying ‘watch him play’ which is a subjective opinion and inevitably highly biased.
You’re entitled to that opinion. Still doesn’t change my vote

Kaprizov is gonna continue to be underrated by many as long as he's playing with poor linemates on the Wild. Then in a few years he's gonna move on to a good team with other good players, and those people will say, "wow, where did Kaprizov come from, I didn't know he was this good".

I went with Pastrnak here, but Rantanen's awfully close and maybe a bit underrated.

Nothing wrong with the other guys here, though. On any given night they might all make a case for themselves.

Last year...Marner first team all star, Rants 2nd
I think the OP's question was As of right now which probably means so far THIS season.
This season so far in order pt wise...Had to list Thompson.
Thompson
Robertson
Pastrnak
Kaprizov
Marner
Rantanen.

That will probably chance by the time the season is done.
Best player between the bunch so far this season.......Pastrnak.

I say this passively but I think wingers in general have less control over regular chances turning into high danger chances vs total chances. High dangers chances are closer to the net and more dependent on defensemen mistakes. Obviously the contrary could be true and similar arguments could be made for regular chances but I think this definitely has an effect. I would argue wingers have more influence on chances out high. It’s probably not a coincidence the uptick in high danger chances in particular occurred when Toronto’s defense was plagued with injuries. He also received quite a bit more defensive zone faceoffs this season (many more than the other players on this list) which isn’t helping either. As far as I am aware his defensive metrics were comfortably the best last season.

I agree that d-men (and centers too) have way more defensive impact at 5 on 5. Wingers mostly guard the points (which requires just not doing something dumb), backcheck with effort, and give support in board battles along the wall (not really Marner’s forte). Where Marner thrives defensively at 5 on 5 is as someone who can very successfully transition from defense to offense. I can get behind the argument pretty easily that he is the best transition guy here. And that is an important part of the game. But, I think the idea that Marner is an amazing 5 on 5 two way stud…some Bergeron of wingers…is tremendously overplayed.
