Nice road win.
Murr was very good, realistically should have only had 1 GA. Not exactly sure how they could determine the puck was overwhelmingly over the goal line, enough so to conclusively over turn the call on the ice. But that's just the NHL being the NHL I guess.
Really felt like everyone played a solid game. Obviously AM34 was on one last night, and realistically has been for the last little while for that matter. He really is starting to look like the Auston of last season again and it really could not be better timing. Hopefully it is just a sign of what is to come.
Also, I actually have really liked the way Gustafsson has been playing lately. I know he wasn't on the ice for the 5v3 PP goal, but he looks so much better at quarterbacking a PP then Mo IMO. I think the thing that stands out the most for him is how he positions his body when he receives the puck at the blue line. You hardly ever see him receive a pass at the top of the umbrella without him walking into it or at the very least posing as a threat to put the puck towards net. Whether or not he actually shoots the puck or not, you have to respect that as a PK'er. He is drawing guys higher then they should be and its opening up our guys on the walls to either walk in or get a cross seam pass through. I actually think we should experiment with him on PP1 for a little while longer. I don't like the idea of 7D + 11F in playoffs, but I get this gut feeling that Gus is going to be our guy on PP1 come the playoffs. Or at the very least utilized more then we think. Everything we know about the Gus/Sandin trade is that the Leafs brass knew they were done after those flurry of trades on the Thursday. We all expected one or multiple D to be flipped, but Kyle never had that intention. Gus was brought in for a very specific reason, and I think we'd be foolish to think it was for anything other then to support our PP in some way. I think I read somewhere that the Leafs are 0/18 on the PP in the last 5 elimination games. It is an aspect of our game that absolutely needs to be a difference maker in April/May and it historically has not been.
It seems odd to want to tinker with the 2nd ranked PP in the NHL, but PP1 needs to be generating more consistent high danger looks then what it is currently doing IMO. They have way too much talent to be moving the puck so passively. Having a threat on the point just opens things up for our difference makers to make plays. It's also worth noting that PK's get exponentially more brave and aggressive in the post season. If we are running out of time and space now, that is only going to intensify in 3 weeks time. Sometimes you just gotta take the shot that the PK gives you, and recently in the post season that has been the point shot that we refuse to take. At the very minimum it cannot hurt to have Gus at the point, as he moves the puck equally as effective as Mo, but also has the willingness and ability to be more then just a disributer.
