I still wonder why he is up in the NHL. He is simply not ready. Offensively he is not effective yet as guys easily shut him down. Defensively he doesn't seem to care and floats around. He should be in the ahl to round his game out and adjust to pro hockey.

At this point he's a pp specialist, which is no issue. But he's like an omark, once you start to play him more at 5 on 5 you run into issues

Seems like he's being rushed like bartschi was early on and Monahan last season.

Just because he hasn't scored any points in 3 games does not mean he is not ready. I know plenty of Oilers that don't look NHL ready, so you should really worry about your own team.

3 games in and people are already saying he's a bust.

Is this the fastest of all time that someone has written off a prospect?

Nope, that would be in the Draisaitl vs Bennett thread, in which like 10 people called Draisaitl a bust before he played a single game.

Cool your jets man. It wasn't long ago that Justin Schultz was being shoved down our throats as a Karlsson lite and uh wasn't RNH supposed to be joining the likes of the Tavares', Stamkos', and Giroux's of the league by now? Leafs fans did it with Kadri, Gardiner, Rielly, and several others. Sens fans did it with Karlsson, Silfverberg, Zibanejad. Oil fans did it with their boys. The Jets are doing it with Trouba. It's Calgary's turn to join the annual Canadian prospect over hyping.

And after any player gets hyped, the fans get their noses tweaked. Oilers fans have been raked over the coals, as have others, in fact, there is currently a Flame fan in an Oiler/Leaf proposal throwing insults over Schremp. Flame fans haven't shied away from freaking out at others for hyping their players. Looks like it's their turn to get poked. :dunno:

As long as a fanbase gives a player more due than they earn and get upset when other fanbases don't follow suit, people are going to react negatively.

So basically. I agree.

Again, as a rival fan as well (Oil), I agree the skillset is fantastic, but the Pat Kane ceiling is far out of reach IMO, except he is even smaller than him (thus will struggle a bit more). Tyler Ennis is a much more realistic comparison.

I don't think anybody, including Flames fans, expect a Pat Kane ceiling. Pat Kane's name just came up is because he is someone that Johnny has a similar play-style too. Johnny has the skillset of getting close to getting to Pat Kane's level, but I expect a 55-65 point PP-specialist winger.

I think this guy will be a good 40-50 pts offensive threat ceiling for you guys in this league, which is nothing to bemoan at all, but even a comparison to Pat Kane's style is just not even remotely close. They look absolutely nothing alike on the ice, in terms of skill-set OR build.

Whiny skeptics: I saw all this out of the corner of my eye, and I'm glad I swooped in. It's enough already!!! He won't be as good as those elite players!!
Gaudreau supporters: Certainly, I know. I agree. I'm with you.
Whiny skeptics: See!? I'm putting a stop to this. My hand has been forced, and I'm in the right! Just look at all the people on my side. I'm glad I'm sorting this out.

Johnny will be fine. Calgary hasn't scored a lot so far anyways. This kid is ready. You can tell by watching him play. He has generated plenty of chances and has played really well.
The offense will eventually come.

He's certainly had some struggles in the first three games. But the transition from NCAA to the NHL is a big one.

He's generated a bunch of chances and he's certainly had more good moments then bad.

I think he has to get used to constantly moving his feet, he's had a few coast moments that he could get away with in University.

There's no doubt that the kid is ludicrisly talented, he also hasn't been rattled or crushed in the first three games, I kind of expected that against a very good St Louis team.

The kid will be find given time.

If you are going to come into a thread with the purpose to rag on a kid, at least put some effort into it. I would have guessed at the same thing you just did after seeing 'winger', 'rookie' and '5'8"'. "Defensively lacking". Haha. Sorry, but you have just been caught making up facts. You either haven't seen him outside of a few highlights, or you are just plainly writing a nice piece of fiction to try and give your argument some merit.

I will not go and say that Gaudreau should be considered for the Selke. He is a rookie, and is prone to making mistakes and getting out of position. With that being said, the kid looks about as disinterested playing defence as Datsyuk. He backchecks LIKE Datsyuk. Before you make a rebuttal citing how dare I compare Gaudreau to Datsyuk, focus on the word 'like'. He backchecks LIKE Datsyuk does. I have seen a number of plays now that the puck has been turned over and he skates back HARD (often beating another Flame who was closer initially) and puts pressure on the puck-carrier. He has even managed to strip the puck carrier a number of times.

I don't know what Gaudreau you have been watching, but it isn't one that is described as 'a floater' on the defensive side.

You may argue that he is not an elite defensive player, and I will counter with "well, of course he is not". The LAST thing he is playing defence is disinterested, however. Just pure fabricated garbage by you in trying to troll this thread.

Please provide more effort in your trolling. This is about a 2/10 from you. Even Devonator trolls this thread at a much higher level.

topchowda and Devonator are my two favorite posters! :)

Agreed with your post regarding Gaudreau's back-checking though... I was taken away with how effective he is with his speed and size playing defensively.

I fail to understand why so many people who have obviously not watched this kid play insist on critiquing his game lol. It's pretty silly.

You enjoy smearing a young man just stepping out into the world? You know the Flames are considering taking back the Hobey because of what you said? They're rethinking all of it. I'll say you have succeeded in taking the smile of little Johnny's face.

Johnny was right wing in practice this morning. Appears that he'll be playing right wing tonight. Weird.

it's pretty fun to watch fans of other teams who've obviously actually WATCHED Johnny play, come in this thread and defend JG.

But, no matter how thin you slice it, there will always be two sides of it.

tbh I think it would of been better to have Gaudreau in the AHL and Bartschi in the NHL than the opposite...

Looks like his time with the team isn't going to last much longer.

Barely played at all in 3rd period, didn't see the ice in OT.

Didn't see him much after Jokinin hit him in the numbers. Thought he looked good when he was out there though.

You can see he's adjusting, and probably gripping the stick a bit too hard wanting to get that first of the season.

That said if we're still playing "Where's Johnny?" by mid November I'd say the AHL wouldn't be a bad move. And no, that doesn't make him a bust.

Might as well swap Bartschi and Gaudreau...?

Still think he gets 20-20 this season. I suppose it could be in the AHL but that competition will be too easy for him, just as much as the NHL may be too hard for him. Let him overcome the challenge, don't send him down already.
