Why would that be your lifestyle choice, that’s weird, don’t get so caught up in it, would be my advice.
Tell that to others on this forum.

I suspect that players like Bergeron are on the ice for tons of shots against and scoring chances as well, based solely on the opponents they're asked to play against.
I'm too lazy to look that up
Below are among forwards in the league with over 250 minutes 5v5 this season, which in total is 304 players.
SCA 5v5
Bergeron: 95 (4th)
Matthews: 222 (285th)
HDCA 5v5
Bergeron: 40 (7th)
Matthews: 94 (280th)
The answer is no. Bergeron is just amazing at not letting it happen.
GP | HDCF | HDCA | % | GF | GA | % | |
1. Marcus Foligno | 172 | 378 | 226 | 62.58 | 112 | 64 | 63.64 |
3. Auston Matthews | 195 | 806 | 508 | 61.34 | 205 | 133 | 60.65 |
4. Patrice Bergeron | 188 | 468 | 296 | 61.26 | 141 | 76 | 64.98 |
Natural Stat Trick (however accurate that is), has Matthews and Bergeron essentially sharing the same % of high danger changes for since 2019 until now.

I mean, that's better, but let's not pretend that it's a huge discrepancy between Matthews and the guy that is known as Mr. Selke (and deservedly so)

Why are you switching to percentages? All that shows is that Matthews is much better offensively, which no one ever doubted, and far worse defensively. 508 HDCA is nuts for a guy who supposedly is elite defensively on a top team.
Lol, did you even look at the defensive numbers posted. No one here his arguing offensive numbersIsn't Matthews the best goal scorer in the game?
If he were Matthews offensively and anywhere close to Bergeron defensively, Matthews would be the best hockey player in the world by an order of magnitude.
He remains, one of the premier offensive players, the best goal scorer, leads the league in takeaways and is otherwise as dominant on the split between his offense and that of the opposition as compared to the best defensive centre in the last 30 years of the league.
I can't realistically ask for better.
The fact that someone would look at these numbers and think he's not been good enough defensively just explains all we need to know with regards to the blind hatred for all things Toronto on HF.
How? It’s obviously not used against Matthews just that EK has been otherworldly in that regard this season.Using ES points as an argument against Matthews?

Matthews. Better offensively and defensively than Karlsson

Why are you ignoring that Matthews had almost double the number of goals against lmfaoNatural Stat Trick (however accurate that is), has Matthews and Bergeron essentially sharing the same % of high danger changes for since 2019 until now.

Definitely agreed with his performance early in the year. He looked rusty to be honest - not sure why.I agree in general, but the thread is specific about the terms. How has Matthews been better offensively this year exactly? He's heating up, but he was mediocre at best (by his standards anyways) for the first 2 months of the season.

Blocked shots is not a good thing to lead. That shows he's spending a lot of time without the puck in his defensive zone allowing the opponent shot opportunities.
At this precise point in the season I’d say Karlsson but Matthews is rapidly catching up after a mediocre start so he’ll overtake him again soon enough
Will be EK this season, but maybe Matthews is saving it for the playoffs
Tell that to Bergeron and other great defensive players. Wrong as it gets.
