I agree with several posters in the belief that O'Dell will surprise some people and based on his work in the A and up here with more limited ice time, he is a 3rd line player. What I like about the Galliardi signing is the message that it sends to the bottom six: "You are fighting for your NHL career with the Jets this fall." Galliardi is on his way down if the size of his contract is any indication. He has a chance to prove people wrong and knows that a lot depends on how fit he shows up to TC in the fall.
We are set up for some serious competition. The smart players got the message earlier in the summer, but I think everyone will be back on the ice working hard on Tuesday morning. This fits in with Maurice's warning. It is not some much the who of the signings but the process (remember that word?). If people show up in TC ready to do their best and to try their hardest at all times, Maurice can do something with these men.
For the ones that don't succeed, there is always the waiver wire, a lot less pay, and maybe a broken dream or two. The one year contracts speak volumes. On the other hand, for a guy like O'Dell, the waiver wire means that he gets a chance to play somewhere, but perhaps not the Jets. I don't see much chance of him clearing waivers. Winnipeg will want to take a good long serious look at him before they see him succeed somewhere else.
