I don't get this.
I hate Bettman. But the idea that he's anti-Red Wing?
Well Bettman sure screwed Detroit in the 2009 finals. I don't think he's anti-Red Wing but the league hasn't done any favors to the Red Wings unlike Pittsburgh and Chicago

Chicago winning 3OA last year was annoying as hell, but do you actually believe the league intervened and made that happen? The odds format is crappy, yes, but Chicago won that pick because of the luck of the draw, not because Gary Bettman wanted them to pick 3rd.

Also, if you actually believe the league conspires for and against certain teams, essentially "fixing" the game, why on earth would you keep watching the NHL?

... if you actually believe the league conspires for and against certain teams, essentially "fixing" the game, why on earth would you keep watching the NHL?

What I'm about to type is a 'slightly' hot take for sure, but the fact that the NHL is incorporated like the NFL means that they have zero legal constraints that would prevent 'fixing'. Coupled with other items, and it's easy to see why this might be taking place. Not saying it is, I'm just advocating for the darkness here.

Let's look at what the judge said when Spygate turned Jets fans into maniacs:

"We do not condone the conduct on the part of the Patriots and the team's head coach, and we likewise refrain from assessing whether the NFL's sanctions (and its alleged destruction of the videotapes themselves) were otherwise appropriate... However, Mayer failed to prove any legal right to damages. At best, he possessed nothing more than a contractual right to a seat from which to watch an NFL game between the Jets and the Patriots, and this right was clearly honored."

U.S. Court Tosses Jets Fan's "Spygate" Lawsuit

So from just a legal perspective, the league has nothing preventing them from fixing. Just because they can, doesn't imply that they do, we're all aware of that fallacy... but I sometimes wonder what would stop them. I mean, the big TV markets are the money makers (Chicago high on that list), so if the league really wanted the capital necessary for sustainability and growth, market economics 101 tells us that they should be rigging outcomes to maximize income. Through the most recent CBA, the small market owners make more money if the league is fixed, so it's pretty obvious why they would want to fix it.

Why do we watch it? Same reason we watch a movie, our political theater, or favorite TV show... for the storyline and entertainment. It is, after all... "sports entertainment", correct?

well for one thing the NHL hires Ernst & Young to oversee the lottery, what would be their motivation to go along with it being a farce? as an accounting firm with 7x the yearly revenue of the NHL I can't imagine the contract would be enough for it to be worth it to them to go along with it financially

Most of their Top tier guys don't fit our core age group/future window & they're all getting paid $/Term/NTC's etc or are about to get paid...so they don't really apply to our needs like 2 21/22 yr. old selke level 2C & #3PMD LD, both are huge needs for us now & in the future. You know who else is/was a 50-60+ pt. Selke C...Patrice Bergeron!!...he's only scored 70pt or more 3x since the start of the 03-04 season, 16 years ago.

Who's to say Serg. doesn't become a consistent 50pt PMD? Cirelli could end up being a low end 1C 2-3 yrs from now. I also wouldn't call either "3rd tier TBL players", more like 2nd tier & rising.

Who's to say Lafreniere doesn't become a consistent 100 point play driver an Rasmussen doesn't become a 45 point 3rd line centre who also shuts down opposition top centres? Cirelli and Sergachev are players that would massively benefit the wings, but Laf on his own is projected to do more than both together as things stand

Such bullshit. Teams that get an extra chance to make the playoffs shouldn’t also get a chance to move up so much. Watch Pittsburgh get Lafreniere.
Exactly. If a team is in playoffs and still gets in lottery why did the 7 non playoff teams agree to bending over like that? I think only one team voted against the format.

Do I think the league conspired to stop the Red Wings? No. Did the league help Pittsburgh by moving the 2009 Stanley Cup finals up by 10 days? Absolutely. I don't think the league actively helps any teams. But an awful lot of good things have happened to Pittsburgh since Mario bought them that it wouldn't surprise me.

I'd say that we can't trust them because of the many times where they brazenly broke federal, state, and/or multinational law/regulation:

None of those things are any indication that tampering with the NHL draft would be worth it for E&Y.

Also... while the women's dress code one is distasteful and shouldn't exist and the hate crime + child porn ones are disgusting, they are also not indicative of an untrustworthy company. Those are actions taken by people employed by a company not remotely related with their profession.

If you don't like and distrust accountants? Fine. That's your right. You can think we're all lying sacks of shit. Removing any defensiveness and assuming that EY is crooked as the day is long... it's not remotely worth their time or effort to rig a sports lottery that only the smallest fraction of the US and Canadian public watch.

"We have heard some talk that the league is kicking around the concept of including the eight losers of the preliminary round of the tournament in a 15-team weighted lottery similar to the preceding four years in which separate drawings were held for the top three picks."

edit: Not sure if this was posted already but here's an article from Larry Brooks about the potential lottery format.

I'll take 2 good/very good pieces vs. 1 good/very good/elite piece.

It's still a very big assumption that Detroit lands 1st overall. But if they do, I wouldn't even THINK of passing up that opportunity for anything remotely short of a trade return so impressive that the opposing general manager was fired by the end of the day.

If you have even a CHANCE to land a highly thought of #1OA, you take it.

1) None of those things are any indication that tampering with the NHL draft would be worth it for E&Y.

2) Also... while the women's dress code one is distasteful and shouldn't exist and the hate crime + child porn ones are disgusting, they are also not indicative of an untrustworthy company. Those are actions taken by people employed by a company not remotely related with their profession.

3) If you don't like and distrust accountants? Fine. That's your right. You can think we're all lying sacks of shit.

4) Removing any defensiveness and assuming that EY is crooked as the day is long... it's not remotely worth their time or effort to rig a sports lottery that only the smallest fraction of the US and Canadian public watch.

1) Are you that averse to risk analysis? It's not E&Y as a whole, it's the propensity of the individual employees to be party to all sorts of criminal activity and the 'company culture' that facilitates. Crude motte and bailey fallacy won't change this reality.

2) Well at least child-porn and outlandish 1950's chauvinism show up on your radar, too bad detailed examples of brazen financial crime didn't make the cut. Hyperbole and jokes aside, what level of corruption and criminality must you see to wax skepticism? That's an honest question. I'm not advocating that we throw the baby out with the bathwater, all I'm saying is that there's a ton of smoke coming from the bonnet of E&Y, with a trail of devastation in their wake... and that deserves our attention.

3) Lol, my bad dude, didn't know you worked at E&Y. As a freshly retired combat vet (AKA: gangster for capitalism) that worked intelligence for the better part of 2 decades, 'distrust' is my middle name, not much can be done about that. I wasn't trying to hit you in the feels, I was just sharing pertinent open source data that (unknown to me before this) relates to your chosen profession. I'm terribly sorry that you were offended, that wasn't my goal. Unless you work for one of the big 4, we have zero beef, and there's no need to fallacy so hard over there.

4) Why on earth would the company issue statements/directives suggesting they work towards nefarious collusion in terms of the NHL and their draft? If you just do a cursory Google search it would be clear that their less than honorable activity takes place in the vacuum of 'plausible deniability'... just like all other clandestine ops ever conducted since the beginning of time, something that should remain until the end of days... or at least until we evolve past the neo-feudal mess we're caught in at the moment. This nefarious activity comes with capital interest, of both sides, in mind... so that's why they 'might' do it... pretty basic stuff. Not only that, but in this case, fixing the NHL draft lottery wouldn't be criminal, it would be well within the legal parameters that govern "sports entertainment". If E&Y and the NHL fixed the draft, it's just 'good business', period, end of story. It's not a question of whether or not they would commit criminal activity, it's a question of whether or not they would do what's best for their clients (and capital interest on both sides) while weighted against the very slim probability of exposure. I don't know if you're familiar with compartmentalization, but I am, and it's very effective. Hiding specific sensitive aspects of ops is pretty easy, especially when the hidden activity violates no set of laws, and takes very little participation or effort.

And again, for the record, I am not saying the draft is rigged, only that it's naive to ignore the lack of laws which preclude enforcement of ethical practice, the criminal legacy at E&Y, and how these aspects 'may' influence the NHL draft. E&Y is anything but honorable, their record more than supports this supposition, and thus, they are not the company you employ to generate a sense of integrity... that violates rationality and common sense. If the NHL (or any major sports league) wanted to put this stuff to bed, they would't employ some 'verification agency', they would just simply incorporate under a structure that stuck closer to quiz show law, not sports entertainment... and it would cost them $0 in consultation. Pretty dope deal if you ask me! Until they do such, they leave the conspiracy door wide open.

Instead of you asking me why this stuff 'might happen', perhaps you should be asking the NHL 'why it's legal' in the 1st place. I'd start there... but I'm an addled combat vet... so take all of this with microscopic grains of salt.

Dramatic difference between sports and sports entertainment

Say the Wings do lose out in the lottery and end up 4th. Would you trade 4th overall for another young player? Like say Tampa is willing to trade Sergachev to us for the 4th, would you make that deal?
